Stock Market Today, 28 October 2026: GIFT Nifty, Sensex and Nifty Pre-Market Cues, FII DII Data and Stocks in Focus
October 28, 2026 | by NammaStockMarket
NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:30 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST
Good morning. Let us look at the share market today with a cup of chai. Yesterday was the monthly F&O expiry and the market barely moved at the index level — but under the surface, smallcaps were on fire. This morning, GIFT Nifty today is pointing lower, mainly because Brent crude has crossed $116 a barrel again. Overnight, Wall Street closed higher on a tech rebound. So Nifty 50 and Sensex are looking at a soft start even though global equities were cheerful. The FII DII data shows foreign investors turned big buyers yesterday, while domestic institutions sold for the first time in days. And with the monthly F&O expiry done and dusted, the F&O market has rolled into the November series. The big local event today is the Jio Platforms listing.
Many people search for “Nifty prediction today”. We do not make predictions. What we do is put all the data in one place, explain what it means, and let you decide with your own research or with help from a SEBI-registered advisor.
1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee
Wall Street had a good session on Tuesday. Technology shares bounced back and the Nasdaq led the gains, with traders getting ready for the US Federal Reserve decision and a heavy week of Big Tech earnings.
| Index | Close | Change | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 52,377.57 | +15.99 | +0.03% |
| S&P 500 | 7,722.60 | +45.83 | +0.60% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,477.81 | +308.43 | +1.18% |
| Russell 2000 | 2,818.87 | +32.44 | +1.16% |
Asian markets were mixed on Tuesday. Japan and South Korea rallied hard, while Chinese and Hong Kong shares slipped. In early trade on Wednesday, the Nikkei was again up around 1%.
| Index | Close (27 Oct) | % Change |
|---|---|---|
| Nikkei 225 (Japan) | 63,268.37 | +1.73% |
| Kospi (South Korea) | 5,638.34 | +3.09% |
| Hang Seng (Hong Kong) | 23,041.32 | −0.73% |
| Shanghai Composite (China) | 3,648.30 | −1.33% |
| ASX 200 (Australia) | 8,850.10 | +0.46% |
| Taiwan Weighted | — | +0.12% |
Now the part that is worrying Dalal Street: crude oil. India imports more than 85% of the crude it uses, so when oil goes up, our import bill goes up, the rupee comes under pressure, and the cost of everything from paint to tyres to airline tickets rises. Brent is near a six-month high.
| Commodity / Currency | Level | % Change |
|---|---|---|
| Brent crude (per barrel) | $116.00 | +1.08% |
| WTI crude (per barrel) | $102.44 | +0.82% |
| Gold (spot, per ounce) | $4,054.62 | −0.14% |
| Silver (spot, per ounce) | $54.32 | −0.17% |
| US Dollar Index | 102.37 | +0.05% |
| US 10-year Treasury yield | 5.01% | — |
| Indian rupee (27 Oct close) | ₹95.12 / $1 | +3 paise |
Crude, gold, silver, dollar index levels as of around 7:00 AM IST on 28 October.
The rupee actually closed 3 paise stronger at ₹95.12 against the dollar on Tuesday, with traders crediting support from the Reserve Bank of India. That is a small win given where oil is.
2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator
GIFT Nifty is the Nifty futures contract that trades at the GIFT City International Financial Services Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. Because it trades for almost 21 hours a day, it is the first hint traders get about how our market may open. Remember — it is an indicator of sentiment, not a promise.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| GIFT Nifty (near month) | 22,712.00 |
| Change | −88.00 |
| % Change | −0.39% |
| Previous close | 22,800.00 |
| Nifty 50 spot close (27 Oct) | 22,749.75 |
| Gap vs Nifty spot close | −37.75 points |
GIFT Nifty snapshot as of 07:33 AM IST, 28 October 2026. It traded as low as about 22,655 earlier in the morning session, so the reading has been moving around. Treat it as a live indicator and check your broker terminal nearer the open.
In simple terms: GIFT Nifty is below yesterday’s Nifty close, which points to a flat-to-weak start.
3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close
Tuesday was one of those strange sessions where the headline indices went nowhere but the broader market partied. BSE Sensex today will start from 73,598.67 and the Nifty from 22,749.75 — both practically unchanged from Monday. But the Nifty Smallcap 100 jumped 2.69% and the Midcap 100 gained 1%.
| Index | Close (27 Oct) | Day Change % | Week Change % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 22,749.75 | −0.02% | +0.66% |
| BSE Sensex | 73,598.67 | −0.01% | +0.65% |
| Nifty Bank | — | −0.72% | — |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | — | +1.00% | — |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | — | +2.69% | — |
| India VIX | 16.40 | −4.43% | — |
Week change is measured against the close of Friday, 23 October 2026 (Nifty 22,600.00 and Sensex 73,123.83). Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 October were the only sessions so far this week.
Market breadth was strongly positive. Out of 3,665 stocks traded, 2,455 advanced and 1,103 declined, with 107 unchanged.
| Sector Index | Day Change % |
|---|---|
| Nifty Media | +3.66% |
| Nifty Pharma | +1.91% |
| Nifty Auto | +1.48% |
| Nifty IT | −0.26% |
| Nifty Bank | −0.72% |
| Stock | Day Change % |
|---|---|
| Tata Consumer Products | +6.78% |
| BSE Ltd | +2.44% |
| Trent | +2.42% |
| Bharti Airtel | +3.20% |
| Power Grid | +1.92% |
| Asian Paints | −1.94% |
| Coal India | −1.73% |
| Grasim Industries | −1.67% |
| State Bank of India | −1.63% |
| Tata Consultancy Services | −1.50% |
Bharti Airtel was the single biggest positive contributor to the Nifty, adding about 42 points. On the other side, HDFC Bank (−26 points), ICICI Bank (−25 points) and SBI (−14 points) pulled the index down — which is why Nifty Bank fell even as the broader market rose.
Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today
These are simply the price zones market analysts say they are tracking, based on where option open interest is sitting and recent price action. They are levels for reference, not forecasts. Nobody knows where the index will go.
| Category | Levels Analysts Are Watching |
|---|---|
| Immediate resistance | 22,800 |
| Next resistance | 22,900 |
| Stronger resistance | 23,000 |
| Pivot / max pain | 22,750 |
| Immediate support | 22,700 |
| Next support | 22,600 |
| Stronger support | 22,500 |
| India VIX | 16.40 (−4.43%) |
India VIX is the “fear gauge”. It measures how much volatility option traders expect over the next 30 days. A VIX near 16 is moderate — not panic, not complacency. It fell about 4.4% on Tuesday, which usually means option sellers were comfortable going into expiry.
4. FII DII Data Today: Tuesday, 27 October 2026 (₹ Crore)
FIIs are Foreign Institutional Investors — overseas funds investing in Indian shares. DIIs are Domestic Institutional Investors — our own mutual funds, insurance companies and pension funds. Tracking who is buying and who is selling tells you a lot about the money flow behind index moves.
Yesterday the roles flipped: foreigners bought heavily and our own institutions booked profits.
| Category | Gross Buy | Gross Sell | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII (cash segment) | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | +4,240.39 |
| DII (cash segment) | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | −1,250.03 |
| Net institutional flow | — | — | +2,990.36 |
Exchange-wise gross buy and gross sell figures for 27 October were not available at the time of writing; only the provisional net figures were published. The FII number was reported as the largest single-day foreign purchase so far this month, and the DII figure was their first net selling session since mid-October.
| Session / Period | FII Net | DII Net |
|---|---|---|
| Tue, 27 Oct 2026 | +4,240.39 | −1,250.03 |
| Mon, 26 Oct 2026 | −1,462.49 | +2,609.57 |
| This week so far (2 sessions) | +2,777.90 | +1,359.54 |
| October 2026 so far | −52,929 | +61,720 |
The month-to-date picture is the important one. Foreigners have pulled out close to ₹53,000 crore from Indian cash equities in October, and domestic institutions have absorbed almost ₹62,000 crore. That is largely your SIP money doing the heavy lifting. Yesterday’s FII buying is one session, not a trend change.
5. Stocks in News Today: Stocks to Watch on 28 October 2026

6. Key Events Today: Jio Platforms Listing, HUL Results and the US Fed Decision
| Event | Detail |
|---|---|
| Jio Platforms listing | Debuts on NSE and BSE today after a ₹30,213 crore IPO. Likely to dominate sentiment, especially for telecom, digital and Reliance group counters. |
| Q2 FY27 earnings | A very heavy day. HUL (with a possible interim dividend), Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, TVS Motor, Hyundai Motor India, Hero MotoCorp and Vedanta are among those reporting. |
| US Federal Reserve decision | The Fed’s two-day meeting began on 27 October. The decision comes out late tonight India time, after our market closes, so the reaction will show up in Indian trade on Thursday. Markets are broadly expecting no change in rates and will read the commentary for tone. |
| Crude oil and West Asia | Brent above $116 on continuing supply worries. Flows through the Strait of Hormuz are reported to be running at roughly 60% of normal. This is the single biggest swing factor for the rupee and for oil-sensitive sectors. |
| Sensex weekly expiry | Tomorrow, Thursday 29 October. |
7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List
Let us decode the jargon first, because F&O talk can sound like a different language.
Open interest (OI) is the total number of futures and options contracts that are still open — not yet squared off. Rising OI with rising price generally means fresh money is coming in; rising OI with falling price generally means fresh short positions. It tells you where traders have placed their bets.
PCR (Put-Call Ratio) divides total put open interest by total call open interest. Above 1 means more puts are open than calls; below 1 means the opposite. Traders use it as a rough sentiment meter.
Max pain is the strike price at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money if the index expired there. Because option writers (sellers) are usually large institutions, the index sometimes gravitates toward this strike near expiry. It is a statistical observation, not a rule.
MWPL (Market Wide Position Limit) is the maximum number of open F&O contracts allowed in a single stock across the whole market. When open interest crosses 95% of MWPL, NSE puts that stock in the F&O ban — no new positions allowed, you can only reduce existing ones. The ban lifts once usage falls below 80%. A stock in the ban list can still be bought and sold normally in the cash (delivery or intraday) market.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Nifty PCR (put-call ratio) | 1.0405 |
| Max pain strike | 22,750 |
| Highest call OI strike | 22,800 |
| Highest put OI strike | 22,750 |
| Total Nifty call OI (27 Oct morning) | 3,142.25 lakh |
| Total Nifty put OI (27 Oct morning) | 3,234.03 lakh |
Option chain data as of the 27 October session. A PCR of about 1.04 is close to balanced, with a slight tilt toward puts.
Expiry calendar you should know:
| Contract | Expiry Day | This Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty weekly | Tuesday | Next weekly expiry: Tuesday, 3 November 2026 |
| Sensex weekly | Thursday | This week: Thursday, 29 October 2026 |
| Monthly F&O | Last Tuesday of the month | October series expired yesterday, 27 October 2026 |
So the October monthly series is over. Traders have rolled over into the November series, which expires on Tuesday, 24 November 2026 (the last Tuesday of November). Do note that 10 November, Diwali-Balipratipada, is an NSE trading holiday, and there is a special Muhurat trading session on Sunday, 8 November.
F&O ban list:
| Stock | MWPL Usage |
|---|---|
| Steel Authority of India (SAIL) | ~85% |
| Ambuja Cements | ~70% |
| Kaynes Technology India | ~67% |
This is the most recent published ban list, for the 27 October session. NSE publishes the fresh list for each day before the market opens — please check the NSE website or your broker’s terminal for today’s confirmed list. MWPL percentages vary slightly between data providers depending on when they are captured.

Why is crude oil above $116 such a big deal for the Indian stock market?
India imports more than 85% of its crude oil. When Brent rises, our import bill grows, which means more dollars leaving the country, more pressure on the rupee and a wider trade deficit. Expensive oil also pushes up input costs for paints, tyres, chemicals, cement, airlines and logistics companies, and raises fuel prices for households, which can feed into inflation. That is why a $116 Brent print makes the market nervous even on a morning when Wall Street closed higher. Oil marketing companies and refiners are watched closely on such days, and so is the rupee.
