Stock Market Today 16 October 2026 – GIFT Nifty, Sensex, Nifty 50 and FII DII Data Pre-Market Report

NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:15 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST

Good morning. If you are tracking the share market today with your first cup of chai, here is the short version: Dalal Street is coming off its best session in four months, and the mood going in looks steady rather than jumpy.

GIFT Nifty today is hovering a little above where Nifty spot closed, which usually hints at a flat-to-firm start. Overnight, the Dow jumped over 550 points even though tech stayed quiet, and Asian markets are bouncing back this morning after a brutal chip sell-off earlier in the week.

Back home, Nifty 50 and Sensex both ended Thursday sharply higher — Sensex added 1,534 points — but the gains were almost entirely in large-cap names. Midcaps and smallcaps actually fell. FII DII data shows the familiar tug-of-war: foreign investors sold another ₹5,285 crore while domestic institutions bought ₹3,319 crore.

One date to circle: because of the Dussehra holiday on Tuesday 20 October, this week’s Nifty F&O expiry moves to Monday 19 October.

A quick word on “Nifty prediction today” — a phrase a lot of people search. We don’t make predictions here. What follows is data, levels other people are watching, and the news behind the moves. What you do with it is your call.

1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee

Wall Street closed higher on Thursday, but in a lopsided way. Money moved out of AI and chip names and into older, steadier sectors — banks, healthcare, consumer. That is why the Dow (30 big industrial names) rose 1.1% while the Nasdaq Composite (tech-heavy) managed only 0.1%.

Index Close Change % Change
Dow Jones Industrial Average 52,177.69 +556.21 +1.1%
S&P 500 7,744.06 +25.12 +0.3%
Nasdaq Composite 26,713.03 +20.16 +0.1%
Russell 2000 (small caps) 2,767.27 +37.74 +1.4%

Asian markets are recovering this morning. South Korea’s Kospi is leading the rebound after memory-chip stocks were hammered earlier in the week.

Market % Change (early trade)
Kospi (South Korea) +3.00%
Nikkei 225 (Japan) +1.77%
Hang Seng (Hong Kong) +0.65%
Shanghai Composite (China) +0.61%

Crude oil matters a lot for India because we import most of what we burn. Brent is easing slightly but still above $105 — high by the standards of recent years, which keeps pressure on our import bill.

Commodity / Currency Level Change
Brent crude (futures) $105.50 / barrel -0.42%
WTI crude (futures) $97.44 / barrel -0.54%
Spot gold $4,154 / ounce -0.4%
MCX gold (Dec 2026) ₹1,47,850 / 10 g +1.37%
MCX silver (Dec 2026) ₹2,10,984 / kg +1.27%
Rupee vs US dollar (15 Oct close) ₹94.99 +18 paise
US dollar index 101.96 -0.57%

The rupee has now gained for five sessions straight, helped by a softer dollar. Provisional quotes for Thursday’s close ranged from 94.99 to 95.06 across sources, so treat the exact paisa as approximate.

2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator

GIFT Nifty is the Nifty futures contract that trades at GIFT City in Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. Because it trades for far longer hours than our cash market, it is the first rough signal of how Indian indices might open — and the number most traders check before 9:15 AM.

Item Value
GIFT Nifty level (8:10 AM IST) 23,091.50
Change vs its own previous close -21.50 (-0.09%)
Previous close 23,113.00
Day’s open 23,100.50
Day’s high 23,114.50
Day’s low 23,062.00
Gap vs Nifty 50 spot close about +94 points

Read that carefully, because it trips people up. GIFT Nifty is down slightly against its own previous close, but it is sitting roughly 94 points above where Nifty 50 closed in the cash market. Futures normally trade at a small premium to spot, so this gap is not unusual and is not a forecast of the opening level. Also note GIFT Nifty data can be delayed by a few minutes.

3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close

Thursday was the best single day for the benchmarks in about four months. But look past the headline: Nifty IT jumped 1.82% and private banks rose 1.89%, while the smallcap index fell 1.31%. Declines outnumbered advances on the exchange. In plain terms, a handful of heavyweights did the lifting.

Index Close (15 Oct) Change % Change Change vs 9 Oct
BSE Sensex 74,315.61 +1,533.72 +2.11% +2.54%
Nifty 50 22,997.35 +374.65 +1.66% +2.12%
Nifty Bank 55,810.50 +494.50 +0.89% n/a
Nifty Midcap 100 n/a n/a -0.36% n/a
Nifty Smallcap 100 n/a n/a -1.31% n/a
Nifty IT 30,719.80 n/a +1.82% +10.76%
Nifty FMCG 44,791.65 n/a -1.06% n/a

Nifty 50 opened at 22,671.30, dipped to 22,637.40 and ran up to a high of 23,056.40 before settling at 22,997.35 — just short of the round 23,000 mark.

Here is who moved most among the index heavyweights.

Stock Close % Change
Tech Mahindra ₹1,650.00 +4.75%
ICICI Bank ₹1,389.40 +3.80%
Reliance Industries ₹1,215.00 +3.44%
Bharti Airtel ₹1,854.00 +3.31%
Nestle India ₹1,275.80 -7.76%
Adani Enterprises ₹2,700.00 -0.83%
Trent ₹2,949.70 -0.72%

Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today

Two bits of jargon first. Support is a level where buying has tended to show up before, so a fall often slows there. Resistance is the opposite — a level where selling has tended to appear. These are simply zones that analysts and chartists are watching. They are for reference, not forecasts. Prices break through these levels all the time.

Category Level
Nifty — resistance being watched 23,200
Nifty — psychological mark 23,000
Nifty — near-term hurdle cited 23,076.90
Nifty — upper zone cited 23,187 – 23,320
Nifty — support being watched 22,800
Nifty — consolidation zone cited 22,850 – 22,900
Nifty Bank — resistance being watched 56,000
Nifty Bank — support being watched 55,500
Nifty daily RSI 49.94
India VIX 14.03 (-0.60)

India VIX is the volatility index — think of it as the market’s nervousness meter. At around 14 it is on the calmer side. A falling VIX alongside a rising market generally means traders are not rushing to buy protection.

4. FII DII Data Today: Thursday, 15 October 2026 (₹ Crore)

FII means Foreign Institutional Investor — overseas funds. DII means Domestic Institutional Investor — our own mutual funds, insurers and pension funds. Watching the two side by side tells you who is supporting the market and who is stepping back. Gross buy is everything they bought, gross sell is everything they sold, and net is the difference.

Category Gross Buy Gross Sell Net
FII (15 Oct) 12,735.60 18,021.00 -5,285.40
DII (15 Oct) 19,438.60 16,119.30 +3,319.40
FII (14 Oct) 16,381.80 18,239.30 -1,857.40
DII (14 Oct) 17,428.60 14,758.20 +2,670.40
FII (13 Oct) 13,465.40 14,770.50 -1,305.10
DII (13 Oct) 16,233.00 13,793.70 +2,439.20
FII (12 Oct) 12,583.20 14,291.70 -1,708.50
DII (12 Oct) 15,506.70 12,461.70 +3,045.00

Add up the week so far and the pattern is hard to miss.

Period FII Net DII Net
12 – 15 October (4 sessions) -10,156.40 +11,474.00
October 2026 so far -49,935.00 +51,829.00

Domestic money has essentially absorbed everything foreign funds have sold this month — a big reason Indian indices held up while Asian tech markets tumbled. Note these are provisional cash-market figures and the exchanges revise them slightly.

6. Key Events Today: RBI Forex Reserves and a Heavy Q2 Results Day

Two things on the domestic calendar.

RBI foreign exchange reserves for the week ended 9 October are due. This is the pile of dollars, gold and other assets the Reserve Bank holds. It matters because the RBI uses these reserves to smooth out sharp rupee moves — and with the rupee gaining for five straight sessions, the number gives a hint about how much intervention has been going on.

Q2 FY27 results land thick and fast. Companies reporting September-quarter numbers today include Federal Bank, Punjab National Bank, DLF, Oberoi Realty, Bajaj Housing Finance, Shoppers Stop, Urban Company, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals, Himadri Speciality Chemical, Tejas Networks, Jindal Saw and Solara Active Pharma Sciences.

Globally, investors are watching news around US Federal Reserve leadership, with Kevin Warsh’s nomination in focus, and whether this week’s AI and semiconductor sell-off has actually run its course.

7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List

F&O stands for futures and options — contracts whose value is derived from an underlying stock or index. Unlike delivery trades, where shares land in your demat account, F&O contracts expire on a fixed date and trade in fixed bundles called lot sizes.

Expiry dates this month, and one important change:

Contract Expiry Date
Nifty weekly Monday, 19 October 2026 (moved from Tuesday 20 October)
NSE holiday Tuesday, 20 October 2026 (Dussehra)
Sensex weekly Thursday, 22 October 2026
Nifty monthly (October series) Tuesday, 27 October 2026
Sensex monthly (October series) Thursday, 29 October 2026

Nifty weekly expiry normally falls on Tuesday. Since Tuesday 20 October is a trading holiday for Dussehra, the expiry shifts back to the previous trading day — Monday 19 October. Worth noting if you hold weekly contracts.

Now the derivatives data. Open interest (OI) is the total number of contracts still open and not yet settled. A big build-up of call options at a strike suggests many traders have sold calls there, which is read as a possible ceiling; a big build-up of puts suggests the reverse. PCR, the put-call ratio, divides put OI by call OI — above 1 means more puts than calls are open. Max pain is the strike at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money at expiry, which is why prices sometimes gravitate towards it.

Item Value
Put-Call Ratio (PCR) 1.65
Max pain strike 22,900
Highest call OI strike 23,500
Highest put OI strike 22,500

Again — these are observations about where positions sit, for reference, not forecasts. Max pain is not a target and OI shifts through the day.

Finally, the F&O ban list today. A stock enters the ban when open interest across the market crosses 95% of its MWPL (market-wide position limit), the cap the exchange sets on total outstanding positions. While banned, you can only reduce existing positions, not create new ones. It is a risk-control measure, not a signal about the company.

Stock MWPL Used
Steel Authority of India (SAIL) 94.60%
Kaynes Technology India 93.98%
Ambuja Cements 92.50%

FAQs: Share Market Today (16 October 2026)

What is GIFT Nifty today?

GIFT Nifty was at 23,091.50 around 8:10 AM IST, down 21.50 points (0.09%) against its own previous close of 23,113. That places it roughly 94 points above Nifty 50’s cash-market close of 22,997.35. GIFT Nifty is the renamed SGX Nifty, now trading at GIFT City in Gujarat.

What were the Nifty 50 and Sensex closing levels?

On Thursday, 15 October 2026, Nifty 50 closed at 22,997.35, up 374.65 points or 1.66%. BSE Sensex closed at 74,315.61, up 1,533.72 points or 2.11%. It was the strongest session for both in about four months, though midcap and smallcap indices ended lower.

What are the Nifty support and resistance levels today?

Analysts are watching support around 22,800 and resistance around 23,200, with 23,000 as a psychological mark. On the option chain, the highest put OI sits at the 22,500 strike and the highest call OI at 23,500. These are levels market participants are tracking for reference, not forecasts of where the index will go.

What was the FII DII data for 15 October 2026?

FIIs were net sellers of ₹5,285.40 crore in the cash market, buying ₹12,735.60 crore and selling ₹18,021.00 crore. DIIs were net buyers of ₹3,319.40 crore, buying ₹19,438.60 crore and selling ₹16,119.30 crore. Across 12–15 October, FIIs sold ₹10,156 crore net while DIIs bought ₹11,474 crore net. Figures are provisional.

When is Nifty expiry this week?

Monday, 19 October 2026. The Nifty weekly expiry normally falls on Tuesday, but 20 October is an NSE trading holiday for Dussehra, so expiry moves to the previous trading day. The Sensex weekly expiry is Thursday, 22 October, and the Nifty October monthly expiry is Tuesday, 27 October.

Which stocks are in the F&O ban list today?

Three stocks are in the F&O ban for 16 October 2026: Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Kaynes Technology India and Ambuja Cements. Each has crossed the exchange’s open-interest threshold against its market-wide position limit. Only position-reducing trades are allowed in banned stocks.

Why did Nifty rise while midcaps and smallcaps fell?

Thursday’s rally was narrow. Nifty IT gained 1.82% and private bank stocks rose 1.89%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 1.31% and Midcap 100 fell 0.36%. Declines outnumbered advances on the exchange. Because Nifty 50 and Sensex are weighted by company size, strong moves in a few heavyweights — Reliance, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra — can lift the headline indices even when most stocks are falling.
