Stock Market Today, 23 September 2026: GIFT Nifty, Sensex and Nifty Pre-Market Cues, FII DII Data and Stocks to Watch
September 23, 2026 | by NammaStockMarket
NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:20 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST
Good morning, and welcome to your daily cup of chai with the markets. Here is everything you need to know about the share market today before the bell rings at 9:15 AM.
Yesterday was a soft one. The Nifty 50 and Sensex snapped a four-day winning run, with IT stocks doing most of the damage. Overnight, Wall Street was a mixed bag but the Nasdaq kept its run going, and crude oil slipped sharply as talk of a thaw between the US and Iran picked up. GIFT Nifty today is hovering right around yesterday’s close. Below: global cues, the latest FII DII data, the levels analysts are watching, stocks in the news, and where F&O expiry stands this week. No tips, no targets — just numbers and news, explained simply.
1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee
Indian markets rarely open in a vacuum. What happened on Wall Street last night and what Asia is doing this morning usually sets the mood for our first hour.
US markets (22 September close). The Dow slipped, the S&P 500 was virtually flat, and the Nasdaq Composite closed at a record for a second day running on renewed AI excitement after Meta’s new AI agent topped the app charts. Falling oil prices helped too.
| US Index | Change |
|---|---|
| Dow Jones | −0.36% |
| S&P 500 | −0.06% (flat) |
| Nasdaq Composite | +0.45% |
| Russell 2000 (small caps) | +0.55% |
Asian markets (23 September morning). Asia picked up Wall Street’s tech cheer.
| Asian Index | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Kospi (South Korea) | 7,153.99 | +1.94% (at open) |
| Kosdaq (South Korea) | 841.73 | +0.88% |
Crude oil, dollar and rupee. India imports most of its oil, so cheaper crude means a smaller import bill, softer inflation and less pressure on the rupee. Brent dipping below $100 this week gave the rupee a helping hand.
| Commodity / Currency | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Brent crude (22 Sep) | $97.64 | −2.69% |
| WTI crude (22 Sep) | $89.42 | −3.19% |
| US dollar index | 100.34 | −0.08% |
| Rupee vs US dollar (22 Sep close) | ₹95.58 | +20 paise |
The trigger was a report that Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US eases military pressure, plus talk of US–Iran diplomacy around the UN General Assembly.
2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator
GIFT Nifty is the Nifty futures contract that trades at GIFT City in Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. Because it trades far longer hours than the NSE, it is the first clue traders get about how our market may open.
| GIFT Nifty (around 7:57 AM IST) | Value |
|---|---|
| Last traded | 23,342.50 |
| Change | +14.50 (+0.06%) |
| Nifty 50 previous close | 23,329.00 |
| Gap vs Nifty spot close | ~+13 points |
So GIFT Nifty is sitting almost exactly where the Nifty closed yesterday — a flat, unexciting open rather than a big gap either way. Business Standard’s morning read, comparing it with the Nifty futures price rather than spot, called it a “slightly negative bias”.
A word on the phrase “Nifty prediction today” that so many people google: we do not make predictions here, and nobody can reliably tell you where an index will close. What we can do is lay out the data and let you read it yourself.
3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close
| Index | Close (22 Sep) | Change | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 23,329.00 | −85.30 | −0.36% |
| BSE Sensex | 74,529.08 | −329.91 | −0.44% |
| Nifty Bank | 56,215.55 | −255.10 | −0.45% |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | — | — | −0.08% |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | — | — | −0.23% |
| India VIX | 10.93 | −0.33 | −2.93% |
Week so far (18 September close to 22 September close):

|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 23,346.40 | 23,329.00 | −0.07% |
| BSE Sensex | 74,294.96 | 74,529.08 | +0.31% |
Market breadth was poor — only 15 of the 50 Nifty stocks closed green. Nifty IT was the top laggard, while Realty held up with Sobha, Anant Raj and DLF among the gainers.
Top Nifty 50 gainers and losers on 22 September:
| Stock | Price | Change |

| Coal India | ₹428.00 | +3.21% |
| Eternal | ₹342.00 | +1.82% |
| InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) | ₹5,030.00 | +1.80% |

| Sun Pharmaceutical | ₹1,846.40 | −1.20% |
Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today
These are the levels market analysts have said they are tracking. They are for reference, not forecasts — a level is simply a price zone where buying or selling has shown up before.
| Index | Support Levels | Resistance Levels |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 23,200 and 23,100 | 23,400, 23,500 and 23,600 |
| Nifty 50 (broader range) | 22,900 | 23,900 |
| Nifty Bank | 56,000 and 55,750 | 56,250, 56,500 and 56,750 |
On India VIX: at 10.93 it is low. VIX measures how much swing traders expect in the Nifty over the next 30 days. A low reading means the market is not pricing in much drama. It is a mood gauge, not a direction gauge — a calm market can still fall.
4. FII DII Data Today: Tuesday, 22 September 2026 (₹ Crore)
FIIs are foreign institutional investors — overseas funds investing in Indian stocks. DIIs are domestic institutional investors — our own mutual funds, insurers and pension funds. Watching who buys and who sells tells you a lot about where the money is flowing.
Provisional cash-market figures for 22 September 2026:
| Category | Net |
|---|---|
| FII / FPI | −₹3,809.99 cr |
| DII | +₹4,120.07 cr |
| Combined | +₹310.08 cr |
Detailed figures for 21 September 2026 (the last fully published day):
| Category | Gross Buy | Gross Sell | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII / FPI | ₹10,637.17 cr | ₹11,213.37 cr | −₹576.20 cr |
| DII | ₹14,098.64 cr | ₹11,301.37 cr | +₹2,797.27 cr |
This week so far (21–22 September):
| Category | Net |
|---|---|
| FII / FPI | −₹4,386 cr |
| DII | +₹6,917 cr |
September 2026 so far (through 21 September):
| Category | Gross Buy | Gross Sell | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII / FPI | ₹2,18,170.10 cr | ₹2,25,787.30 cr | −₹7,617.20 cr |
| DII | ₹2,20,007.70 cr | ₹1,80,992.10 cr | +₹39,015.90 cr |
The pattern this month has been consistent: foreign money trickling out, domestic institutions mopping it up and then some. A lot of that domestic buying is your and my SIP money reaching the market through mutual funds.
5. Stocks in News Today: Stocks to Watch on 23 September 2026

| 360 ONE WAM | Aashish Agarwal appointed CEO with effect from 15 February 2027 |
| Lemon Tree Hotels | Opened Keys Prima in Nashik, its first hotel in the city |
Quick jargon check: a show-cause notice is a tax demand asking a company to explain itself, not a final penalty. A block deal or stake sale by a large shareholder adds supply to the market, which is why traders watch it.
6. Key Events Today: IPO Listings, New Issues and Global Diplomacy
The primary market is where most of the action is today.
Listing on the exchanges today: Hero Motors, SS Retail and Jindal Supreme (India).
IPOs opening for subscription today:
| IPO | Price Band | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| Adroit Industries | ₹126–134 | 25 September |
| Swastika Infra | ₹175–185 | 25 September |
| ArMee Infotech | ₹350–375 | 25 September |
| Elevate Campuses | ₹343–362 | 25 September |
Global watch: UN General Assembly discussions around US–Iran de-escalation, which has been moving crude prices all week, plus the Trump–Xi meeting expected later this week. Any headline there tends to show up in oil, and from there in our inflation and rupee numbers.
7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List
F&O means futures and options — contracts whose value comes from an underlying stock or index. They expire on fixed days, which makes those days busier than usual.
| Expiry | Day |
|---|---|
| Nifty weekly (just done) | Tuesday, 22 September |
| Sensex weekly | Thursday, 24 September |
| Nifty weekly + September monthly F&O | Tuesday, 29 September |
The next Nifty expiry, on 29 September, is also the monthly one — it is the last Tuesday of the month. Monthly expiry days usually see heavier volumes as traders roll positions into the next series.
Open interest (OI) is the number of contracts still outstanding. Where OI piles up tells you which strikes traders have taken big positions at. Heavy call OI at a strike is often described as a resistance zone, heavy put OI as a support zone.
| Nifty options (29 Sep series, morning of 23 Sep) | Value |
|---|---|
| Highest call OI strike (near term) | 23,400 |
| Highest put OI strike (near term) | 23,300 |
| Put-call ratio (PCR) | ~0.92 |
| Max pain | 23,450 |
| Nifty lot size | 65 |
PCR is total put OI divided by total call OI — above 1 means more puts are open than calls. It swings sharply right after an expiry, so readings early in a new series are noisy. Max pain is the strike at which the largest number of option contracts would expire worthless; it is an observation about positioning, not a prediction.
F&O ban list today (23 September):
| Stock in F&O Ban |
|---|
| Kaynes Technology |
| LIC Housing Finance |
| Manappuram Finance |
| Steel Authority of India (SAIL) |
MWPL stands for Market Wide Position Limit — the maximum derivative exposure the exchange allows in a stock, based on its free-float shares. When open interest crosses 95% of that limit, the stock enters the ban, and only position-closing trades are allowed until it falls below 80%. Cash market trading continues as normal. Do check NSE’s daily list before trading.

Why did crude oil fall, and why does it matter for India?
Brent fell 2.69% to $97.64 and WTI 3.19% to $89.42 on 22 September, on reports of possible US–Iran de-escalation, including talk of the Strait of Hormuz reopening. India imports the bulk of its crude, so lower prices ease the import bill, cool inflation and support the rupee.
