Stock Market Today 30 September 2026 – GIFT Nifty, Sensex, Nifty 50 Pre-Market Cues and FII DII Data

NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:15 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST

Good morning, and welcome to your daily chai-and-charts round-up of the share market today. Let us start with the honest bit: September has been a rough month. The Nifty 50 lost 5.67% over the September expiry series, and yesterday made it two red sessions in a row. So this morning the question everyone is asking is simply — does the bleeding pause?

Here is what we can actually see. GIFT Nifty today is trading a shade lower, which points to a soft start. Asian markets, on the other hand, have finally broken a three-day losing run. Wall Street closed a touch in the red on worries about American consumer confidence and a 30-year bond yield at a 24-year high. Crude is back above $103 a barrel. Nifty 50 and Sensex both closed lower yesterday, and the FII DII data shows foreign investors sold nearly ₹10,000 crore in a single session — the heaviest in weeks. With the monthly F&O expiry behind us (it was yesterday, Tuesday 29 September), today is day one of the October series, so open interest is being built from scratch.

Many people search for “Nifty prediction today”. We do not make predictions here — nobody can honestly tell you where an index will close. What we can do is lay out the numbers, the levels analysts are watching, and the news that matters, and let you make your own call. Let us get into it.

1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee

American markets slipped for a second straight session. The trigger was a consumer confidence reading that fell to a 12-year low, plus the 30-year US Treasury yield grinding up to roughly 5.60% — its highest since 2002. When long-term bond yields rise, money tends to move out of equities, and emerging markets like India usually feel that pull too.

Index Close Change (Pts) Change (%)
Dow Jones Industrial Average 51,349.92 −131.59 −0.26%
S&P 500 7,670.84 — −0.17%
Nasdaq Composite 26,797.54 — −0.09%

Asia is doing better this morning. The region snapped a three-day losing streak, with Japan leading.

Index Change (%) Note
Nikkei 225 (Japan) +1.29% Best performer in the region this morning
Kospi (South Korea) +0.43% Modest gains

Now the two numbers that have been driving Indian markets all month — oil and the rupee.

Item Level Change What it means
Brent crude (futures) $103.73 +1.11% Back up after a near-3% drop the previous session
Indian rupee vs US dollar Below ₹96 Low of ~96.15 on 29 Sep Weakest zone in a while; RBI stepped in to slow the fall

A quick explainer, because this matters more than people realise. India imports most of its crude oil. When Brent goes up, our import bill goes up, the rupee weakens, and the cost of everything from paint to plastics to airline tickets rises. That is why an oil headline in the Middle East shows up in your demat account in Mumbai. Brent has steadied after Saudi Arabia restored roughly half the capacity of its East–West pipeline following drone attacks, but US–Iran tension is still very much live.

2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator

Before NSE opens at 9:15 AM, traders look at GIFT Nifty — the Nifty futures contract that trades at GIFT City in Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. Because it runs for far longer hours, it gives the first rough hint of where our market may open.

Indicator Level Change Signal
GIFT Nifty (as of ~8:01 AM IST) 22,816 −50 pts Points to a soft, slightly negative start
Nifty 50 previous close (spot) 22,716.20 −64.05 pts Reference for the gap

One caution, and it is a real one: GIFT Nifty is an indicator, not a promise. It tells you the mood at 8 AM. Between 8 AM and 9:15 AM, a single headline can flip that mood completely. Treat it as a weather forecast, not a timetable.

3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close

Yesterday was a quiet decline rather than a panic. The Nifty dipped to 22,569.65 intraday before recovering some ground, but still could not close green. Broader markets did worse than the headline indices, which is usually a sign that retail-heavy names are under more pressure.

Index Close Change (Pts) Change (%)
Nifty 50 22,716.20 −64.05 −0.28%
BSE Sensex 72,529.07 −242.65 −0.33%
Nifty Bank 54,259.95 −211.70 −0.39%
Nifty Midcap 100 — — −0.99%
Nifty Smallcap 100 — — −0.81%

How the week and the series have gone so far:

Period Index Change (%)
Monday, 28 Sep Nifty 50 −1.56%
Monday, 28 Sep Nifty Bank −1.99%
Tuesday, 29 Sep Nifty 50 −0.28%
September expiry series Nifty 50 −5.67%

Sector-wise, only three of eleven major sectors managed to close higher.

Category Name Change (%)
Top sector gainer Nifty Metal +0.78%
Sector gainer Nifty Pharma +0.64%
Top sector loser Nifty Consumer Durables −2.71%
Sector loser Nifty Realty −2.00%
Sector loser Nifty IT −1.48%

And the individual movers in the Nifty 50 pack:

Stock Change (%) Direction
Adani Enterprises +5.01% Top gainer
Adani Ports & SEZ +4.49% Gainer
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories +2.53% Gainer
Titan Company −3.00% Top loser
Wipro −2.95% Loser
HCL Technologies −2.44% Loser

Market breadth was weak. Of 3,679 stocks traded on NSE, 1,529 advanced, 2,039 declined and 111 were unchanged. Worth noting: 227 stocks hit a 52-week low against just 66 at a 52-week high. Within the Nifty 50 itself, 18 stocks rose and 32 fell.

Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today

These are the levels analysts and technical desks say they are watching. They are reference points, not forecasts — nobody is telling you the index must stop here.

Level Nifty 50 Nifty Bank
Immediate resistance 22,800 54,500
Next resistance zone 23,000 – 23,120 —
Immediate support 22,600 54,000
Yesterday’s low (support reference) 22,569.65 —
Wider support spoken about 22,221.85 —
Indicator Value Change Plain meaning
India VIX 13.41 −1.67% Fear gauge easing; below 15 suggests no panic yet
Nifty daily RSI 26.71 — Below 30 is technically “oversold” territory

A word on RSI, since it comes up a lot. The Relative Strength Index is a 0-to-100 momentum measure. Below 30 means the fall has been fast and deep. It does not mean a bounce is due — an oversold market can stay oversold for weeks. It simply tells you the selling has been one-sided.

4. FII DII Data Today: Tuesday, 29 September 2026 (₹ Crore)

This is the table that explains yesterday’s mood better than any chart. FII means Foreign Institutional Investor — overseas funds. DII means Domestic Institutional Investor — our own mutual funds, insurance companies and pension funds. When FIIs sell and DIIs buy, you often get exactly what we saw: a market that drifts down slowly instead of crashing.

Category Gross Buy Gross Sell Net
FII / FPI (cash) 22,472.70 32,452.92 −9,980.22
DII (cash) 46,261.11 39,308.40 +6,952.71

FIIs sold just under ₹10,000 crore in one session — the heaviest single-day selling of the month so far. Domestic funds absorbed about ₹6,953 crore of it.

Here is the recent run of net flows, so you can see the pattern rather than one day in isolation:

Date FII Net DII Net
Tue, 29 Sep 2026 −9,980.22 +6,952.71
Mon, 28 Sep 2026 −5,353.22 +5,189.02
Fri, 25 Sep 2026 −3,693.93 +2,838.17
Thu, 24 Sep 2026 −5,027.36 +4,301.18
This week so far (2 sessions) −15,333.44 +12,141.73

Four straight sessions of foreign selling, four straight sessions of domestic buying. That tug-of-war is the single most important thing happening in the Indian market right now.

6. Key Events Today: Index Rebalancing, Four Listings and the New F&O Series

Three things make today a little different from an ordinary Wednesday.

First, the NSE index rebalancing takes effect. Twice a year, NSE Indices reviews which companies belong in which index. From today, BSE Ltd is in the Nifty 50 and Wipro is out. There are also changes across Nifty India Consumption (Fortis Healthcare and Torrent Pharmaceuticals in; Adani Power and Havells India out), Nifty EV & New Age Automotive, Nifty India Defence and several others. This matters because index funds and ETFs that track these indices must mechanically buy the entrants and sell the exits, which can create unusual volumes in those names.

Second, four companies list today — Adroit Industries, Elevate Campuses, ArMee Infotech and Swastika Infra. Listing days tend to be volatile, and price bands and circuit filters work differently for a freshly listed stock.

Third, it is day one of the October F&O series. The monthly expiry was yesterday. All the open interest you will see today is fresh positioning, so the usual OI signals need a few sessions to become meaningful.

Also on the radar: it is the last day of the September quarter, monthly auto sales numbers start rolling in from tomorrow, and global desks are watching US–Iran headlines and that 5.60% US 30-year bond yield.

7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List

Let us decode the jargon first, because F&O talk can sound like a different language.

Open Interest (OI) is the total number of futures and options contracts still open — not yet closed or expired. Rising OI at a particular strike price means traders are actively building positions there.

PCR (Put-Call Ratio) divides total put open interest by total call open interest. Roughly speaking, a PCR above 1 means more puts than calls are open, which traders read as cautious-to-positive; below 1 means calls dominate, read as cautious. It is a sentiment thermometer, not a signal.

Max pain is the strike price at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money if the index expired exactly there. It is an options-maths concept, not a target.

MWPL (Market-Wide Position Limit) is the exchange’s cap on total open positions in a single stock’s derivatives. Cross about 95% of it and the stock enters a ban period — you can only reduce existing positions, not create new ones.

Here is the latest option chain picture, as of the close of 29 September:

Metric Value What traders read into it
Put-Call Ratio (PCR) 0.86 Below 1 — calls slightly dominate; cautious tone
Max pain strike 22,750 Closest options-maths cluster to spot
Highest call open interest 23,500 Where the heaviest call writing sits
Highest put open interest 22,700 Where the heaviest put writing sits

Again — these are reference points, not forecasts.

Expiry calendar, so you are not caught out:

Contract Expiry Day Next Date
Nifty weekly options Tuesday 6 October 2026
Sensex weekly options Thursday 1 October 2026
Monthly F&O (all) Last Tuesday of the month 27 October 2026

F&O ban list: the exchange publishes a fresh list every morning before the open. In the most recently published list (for 29 September), two stocks were under ban — LIC Housing Finance and Steel Authority of India (SAIL). Do check the NSE website or your broker’s terminal for today’s updated list before the open, because it changes daily. Being in the F&O ban list is purely a position-limit matter; you can still buy and sell the shares in the cash segment for delivery as usual.

Why is BSE Ltd in the news today?

Why did the market fall so much in September?

Over the September expiry series, the Nifty 50 declined 5.67%. The reasons most commonly cited are elevated crude oil prices, a weakening rupee, rising global bond yields, sustained foreign institutional selling, and Middle East geopolitical tension. That is a description of what happened, not a view on what comes next.
