Stock Market Today 6 October 2026 – GIFT Nifty, Sensex, Nifty Pre-Market Cues and FII DII Data

NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:30 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST

Good morning, and welcome to your daily cup of chai with the markets. Here is everything you need before the bell for the share market today. Monday finally gave the bulls something to smile about — the Sensex snapped a four-day losing run — and GIFT Nifty today is again holding above Monday’s close, pointing to a steady start for Nifty 50 and Sensex. Below you will find the global cues, the FII DII data, the levels analysts are watching, the stocks in the news, and what the F&O expiry calendar looks like this week. One important note before we start: this is a news and data report. We do not make Nifty predictions today or any other day, and nothing here is a buy or sell call.

1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee

Wall Street closed higher on Monday, 5 October, with technology leading again. The Nasdaq Composite ended at a fresh high, even as the US 10-year Treasury yield stayed near its highest level in years — a combination that has been a headache for emerging markets all year.

Index / Asset Level Change
Nasdaq Composite (5 Oct close) 27,477.31 +1.05%
S&P 500 (5 Oct close) — +0.66%
Dow Jones Industrial Average (5 Oct close) — +0.18%
US 10-year Treasury yield 5.32% Near multi-year high

Asian markets are mixed-to-positive this morning, taking cues from the US tech rally.

Asian Market Level Change
Nikkei 225 (Japan) — +0.27%
Hang Seng (Hong Kong) — +0.71%
KOSPI (South Korea) — −0.75%
ASX 200 (Australia) 8,749 +0.70%

Commodities and the currency are the bit that matters most for India right now. Brent crude has slipped back to roughly the $100 mark after sitting above it for weeks, and that cooling is one reason Monday’s rebound happened at all. (Brent is the global benchmark grade of crude oil; India imports more than 85% of the oil it uses, so a higher Brent price means a bigger import bill and more pressure on the rupee.)

Commodity / Currency Level Change
Brent crude (Dec futures) $100.51 /bbl ~+0.3%
Brent crude (5 Oct close) $102.52 /bbl —
WTI crude (5 Oct close) $90.66 /bbl —
Gold (spot) $4,130 /oz −0.2%
Gold (MCX Oct) ₹1,49,880 /10g −0.34%
Silver (MCX Dec) ₹2,27,978 /kg +0.93%
Rupee (1 Oct close) ₹96.32 /$ —

The rupee opened 10 paise stronger at 96.22 on Monday and ended the session with gains; the exact closing print was not available at the time of writing. HDFC Securities noted that spot USD-INR is seen consolidating between 95.95 and 96.50 in the near term — a range to note, not a forecast.

2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator

GIFT Nifty is the Nifty futures contract that trades out of GIFT City in Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. Because it trades for far longer hours than our cash market, it is the first rough hint of where Nifty may open — nothing more than a hint.

Indicator Value
GIFT Nifty (early trade, 6 Oct) 22,644
Change +22 pts
Nifty 50 previous close (5 Oct) 22,555.75
Gap vs Nifty spot close ~+88 pts
Nifty Oct futures close (5 Oct) 22,623.70
Nifty Oct futures premium to spot +67.95 pts

GIFT Nifty sitting roughly 88 points above Monday’s Nifty close suggests a flat-to-positive opening. By 9:15 AM this gap often shrinks or disappears entirely, so treat it as a starting data point, not a destination.

3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close

Monday, 5 October was a relief day. The BSE Sensex today starts from 72,382.47 after adding 472.77 points, and Nifty from 22,555.75 after adding 133.80 points. FMCG did the heavy lifting — ITC alone jumped over 5% after a brokerage upgrade — while healthcare and pharma lagged.

Index Previous Close (5 Oct) Change % Change Last Week
Nifty 50 22,555.75 +133.80 +0.60% −3.1%
BSE Sensex 72,382.47 +472.77 +0.66% −2.7%
Nifty Bank 54,714.10 +263.35 +0.48% —
Nifty Midcap 100 — — +0.67% —
Nifty Smallcap 100 — — +0.47% —
India VIX 14.74 +0.28 — —

Some context, because it matters: the week ending 1 October was the eighth straight weekly fall for the benchmarks — the longest such run in about 25 years. Over those eight weeks Nifty is down roughly 8.7% and the Sensex about 8.4%. Record foreign outflows (around $27.8 billion so far in 2026), crude above $100, rising global bond yields and a weak monsoon have all been named as reasons.

Category Stocks (5 Oct)
Top gainers ITC (+5.08%), BSE Ltd (+4.39%), Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (+3.31%), Shriram Finance, Bajaj Finance
Top losers HCL Technologies (−3.31%), Max Healthcare (−2.55%), HDFC Bank (−2.27%), Apollo Hospitals, Asian Paints
Sectors up FMCG (+1.80%), Consumer Durables (+1.53%), PSU Bank (+0.97%), Energy (+0.57%), Realty (+0.56%)
Sectors down Healthcare (−1.00%), Pharma (−0.74%), IT (−0.01%)

Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today

These are simply the levels brokerage analysts said they are watching. They are reference points for understanding market structure — not forecasts, and not advice.

Analyst / Brokerage Support Levels Resistance Levels
Nagaraj Shetti, HDFC Securities 22,400 22,800
Sudeep Shah, SBI Securities 22,400–22,380; then 22,220 22,700–22,720; then 22,850
Rupak De, LKP Securities 22,400 22,600
Hitesh Rathi, Angel One 22,430–22,400; then 22,200–22,100 22,600–22,650; then 22,850–23,000

India VIX at 14.74 is the market’s “fear gauge” — it measures how much movement option prices are building in over the next 30 days. A reading in the mid-teens means traders are expecting normal, not panic-level, swings.

4. FII DII Data Today: Monday, 5 October 2026 (₹ Crore)

FIIs are Foreign Institutional Investors (overseas funds) and DIIs are Domestic Institutional Investors (our mutual funds, insurers and pension money). “Net” is simply buying minus selling in the cash market. The pattern of 2026 continued on Monday: foreigners sold, domestic money absorbed it.

Category Gross Buy Gross Sell Net
FII (5 Oct) 15,674.60 20,373.80 −4,699.10
DII (5 Oct) 20,492.90 15,311.30 +5,181.60
FII (1 Oct) 12,260.26 21,744.48 −9,484.22
DII (1 Oct) 25,420.04 15,378.20 +10,041.84
Period FII Net DII Net
October 2026 so far (1 + 5 Oct) −14,183.32 +15,223.44
Previous 30 days −64,669 +1,15,633

So for the month so far, DIIs have bought slightly more than FIIs have sold. That tug-of-war is the single most important number to track in this market.

6. Key Events Today: RBI MPC Day 2 and Nifty Weekly Expiry

Two things dominate the calendar.

First, the RBI Monetary Policy Committee is in the middle of its three-day meeting (5–7 October). Governor Sanjay Malhotra announces the decision tomorrow, Wednesday 7 October, at 10:00 AM IST, with a press conference at noon. The repo rate — the rate at which the RBI lends to banks — is currently 5.25%, left unchanged through four consecutive policy rounds after a cumulative 125 basis points of cuts during 2025. In a Business Standard poll, eight of ten economists said they expect a 25 basis point hike, which would be the first increase since 2023. Nobody knows what the committee will actually do, so days like this usually see traders trimming risk rather than adding it.

Second, today is the Nifty weekly expiry (more in the next section).

Also on the calendar: the SRIT India and Shah Investor’s Home listings, day 2 of the R.K. Fashion Accessories IPO, and global attention on US bond yields.

7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List

A quick jargon clearing, because F&O language can feel like a different dialect.

Open interest (OI) is the total number of futures and options contracts currently open and unsettled. Rising OI means fresh money is coming into that strike; falling OI means positions are being closed.

PCR (put-call ratio) divides total put OI by total call OI. Below 1 means more call writing than put writing. Yesterday Nifty’s PCR was 0.9104 — fairly balanced, leaning slightly cautious.

Max pain is the strike price at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money at expiry, and therefore where option writers would be most comfortable seeing the index settle. For this expiry it sits at 22,550 — almost exactly where Nifty closed.

MWPL (market-wide position limit) is the cap the exchange sets on total derivative positions in a single stock. Cross 95% of it and the stock enters the “ban period”: no new F&O positions, only squaring off existing ones. It exits the ban when usage falls back below 80%. A ban is a plumbing restriction, not a verdict on the company.

Item Detail
Nifty weekly expiry Today, Tuesday 6 October 2026
Sensex weekly expiry Thursday, 8 October 2026
Monthly F&O expiry Tuesday, 27 October 2026 (last Tuesday)
Nifty PCR (5 Oct) 0.9104
Max pain 22,550
Highest call OI strike 23,000
Highest put OI strike 22,400
Expected range implied by options 22,405 – 22,665
Stock F&O Ban Status (6 Oct)
Ambuja Cements In ban period — MWPL utilisation around 95%
Bandhan Bank In ban period — MWPL utilisation around 87% and above the exit threshold
LIC Housing Finance Not banned — MWPL around 86%, close to the limit
Kaynes Technology India Not banned — MWPL around 85%
Manappuram Finance Not banned — MWPL around 82%
Steel Authority of India Not banned — MWPL around 81%

With expiry today and the RBI tomorrow, option activity around the 22,400 put and 23,000 call strikes is where most of the F&O conversation will sit.
