Stock Market Today 29 September 2026 – GIFT Nifty, Sensex, Nifty Pre-Market Cues and FII DII Data

NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:15 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST

Good morning, and welcome to your daily look at the share market today. Let us be honest — Monday was a rough day. The Nifty 50 and Sensex fell for a seventh straight session, crude oil went above $106 a barrel, and the rupee slipped to a fresh low. This morning, GIFT Nifty today is sitting almost flat, which tells us the market is pausing for breath rather than panicking. Below you will find the FII DII data from Monday, the levels analysts are keeping an eye on, and a reminder that today is a big one for derivatives traders — it is monthly F&O expiry day. No predictions here, just the numbers and what they mean.

1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee

Wall Street closed lower on Monday. The reason was not company earnings — it was bonds. The US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.24%, its highest since 2007. When safe government bonds pay that much, investors demand more from shares, and expensive technology stocks feel it first.

Index Close Change (pts) Change (%)
Dow Jones 51,481.51 -347.11 -0.67%
S&P 500 7,683.69 -59.72 -0.77%
Nasdaq Composite 26,820.38 -248.34 -0.92%
US 10-year yield 5.24% +0.06 pp —

Asian markets are down this morning too, following Wall Street and worrying about the same oil story.

Market Move Today
Japan Nikkei 225 -0.89%
Hong Kong Hang Seng -0.45%

Now the part that matters most for India. We import most of our oil, so every dollar on the crude price adds to our import bill and puts pressure on the rupee.

Commodity / Currency Level Change
Brent crude $106.93 / barrel +1.57%
MCX Gold (Oct 2026) ₹1,47,499 / 10g -2.24%
MCX Silver (Dec 2026) ₹2,27,785 / kg -2.94%
Rupee vs US dollar ₹96.03 -28 paise

Crude jumped after the United States rejected Iran’s latest proposal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz — the narrow sea route through which a large share of the world’s oil travels. Gold and silver, oddly, fell sharply; when bond yields rise, metals that pay no interest look less attractive.

2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator

GIFT Nifty is the Nifty 50 futures contract that trades at the NSE International Exchange in GIFT City, Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. It runs for nearly 21 hours a day, so by the time our market opens, GIFT Nifty has already reacted to the US and Asian sessions. That is why traders check it first thing in the morning. Indian residents cannot trade it — for us it is simply a free signal.

Item Value
GIFT Nifty 22,810.50
Change -11.50
Change (%) -0.05%
Previous close 22,822.00
Day’s high 22,845.00
Day’s low 22,799.50

GIFT Nifty snapshot at 7:54 AM IST. Against Monday’s Nifty close of 22,780.25, GIFT Nifty is trading at a small premium, so the pre-market signal is broadly flat. Remember, this is just an indication — the actual opening depends on where buyers and sellers meet at 9:15 AM.

3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close

Monday was the seventh consecutive falling session, and the Nifty’s lowest close since 2 April. Selling was everywhere — all 16 major sectoral indices ended in the red, with PSU Bank down about 3% and Telecom down about 2%.

Index Close (28 Sep) Change (pts) Change (%) Last Week (%)
Nifty 50 22,780.25 -360.25 -1.56% -0.90%
BSE Sensex 72,771.72 -1,124.02 -1.52% -0.50%
Nifty Bank 54,471.65 — -1.99% -1.40%
Nifty Midcap 100 — — -1.63% —
Nifty Smallcap 100 — — -1.85% —

Market breadth — a simple count of how many shares rose versus fell — was clearly negative: 1,214 advanced, 2,905 declined and 166 were unchanged. Only three of the fifty Nifty stocks managed to close higher.

Stock Move (28 Sep)
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories +1.67%
Infosys +0.30%
HDFC Life Insurance +0.11%
Tata Motors (PV) -3.00%
Adani Enterprises -2.93%
Jio Financial Services -2.86%
Power Grid Corporation -2.84%
Larsen & Toubro -2.83%

For the record, the Nifty has now fallen for seven weeks in a row, losing close to 6% over that stretch. Last Friday it closed the week at 23,140.50 and the Sensex at 73,895.74.

Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today

These are simply the levels market analysts have said they are watching, based on Monday’s price action and option data. They are for reference, not forecasts — nobody knows where the index will actually go.

Category Level
Immediate support (analysts watching) 22,737
Option-based support (highest put OI) 22,000
First resistance (50% retracement) 22,921
Monday’s high 23,080
Resistance near 8-day EMA 23,172
Option-based resistance (highest call OI) 24,000
India VIX ~13.6 (up about 12%)

India VIX is the market’s fear gauge. It measures how much movement options traders expect over the next 30 days. A jump of roughly 12% in one day, as we saw on Monday, means people are paying up for protection. On the technical side, the Nifty’s 14-day RSI closed at 27.69 — below 30 is what chartists call “oversold”, meaning the fall has been fast, though an oversold reading on its own does not mean the fall is finished.

4. FII DII Data Today: Monday, 28 September 2026 (₹ Crore)

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) are overseas funds; Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) are our own mutual funds, insurers and pension funds. For many months now the pattern has been the same — foreigners selling, domestic funds buying.

Category Gross Buy Gross Sell Net
FII / FPI (cash) 9,047.60 14,400.80 -5,353.20
DII (cash) 15,918.30 10,729.30 +5,189.00

Over the last five trading sessions (22–28 September), the split looks like this:

Category Net Over 5 Sessions
FII / FPI (cash) -16,267.10
DII (cash) +18,790.00

So domestic money has absorbed nearly all of the foreign selling. That is the main reason the fall has been steady rather than sudden. Do note that these are provisional exchange figures and get revised slightly the next day.

6. Key Events Today: Monthly F&O Expiry, IPOs and US Data

  • Monthly F&O expiry. Today is the last Tuesday of September, which makes it the monthly expiry for Nifty futures and options, as well as the weekly Nifty expiry. Expect sharper, more jumpy moves than usual, especially in the last hour.
  • Primary market. Four new IPOs open for subscription today, including EverestIMS Technologies, and Varmora Granito lists on the exchanges.
  • Crude oil headlines. Any development in the US–Iran talks on the Strait of Hormuz will move oil, and oil is currently moving our market.
  • US data tonight. September Consumer Confidence and August JOLTS job openings are due. Both feed into the debate about how long the US Federal Reserve keeps rates high — which is exactly what pushed Treasury yields to 5.24%.

7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List

A quick jargon check before the numbers.

Open interest (OI) is the total number of futures and options contracts that are still open — not yet closed or settled. Rising OI at a particular strike price means traders are building positions there. PCR, or put-call ratio, divides total put OI by total call OI. Below 1 means more call writing than put writing, which is usually read as a cautious market. Max pain is the strike at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money at expiry, so option writers have an interest in the index finishing near it. And MWPL — market-wide position limit — is the exchange’s cap on how much open interest a single stock can carry in derivatives.

Item Value
Nifty put-call ratio (PCR) 0.62
Max pain strike 22,950
Highest call OI strike 24,000
Highest put OI strike 22,000
Expected range (per option data) 22,653 – 22,908

Option chain data as of 4:10 PM IST on 28 September 2026.

F&O ban list today. When a stock’s open interest crosses 95% of its MWPL, the exchange stops fresh derivative positions in it until the figure falls back below 80%. During the ban you can still square off or reduce existing positions, and the cash market — normal delivery and intraday buying — continues as usual. As per the latest NSE list published after Monday’s close, these stocks are in the ban period:

Stock MWPL Used
Kaynes Technology India 219.31%
LIC Housing Finance 133.35%
Manappuram Finance 122.21%
Steel Authority of India (SAIL) 102.87%

Expiry reminders for the week: Nifty weekly and monthly expiry is today, Tuesday 29 September. Sensex weekly expiry falls on Thursday, 1 October. And a heads-up — Friday, 2 October is Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, a trading holiday, so this is a four-day week.

Why did the Indian market fall on 28 September 2026?

Three things came together. Brent crude rose above $106 a barrel after the US rejected Iran’s proposal on the Strait of Hormuz, which matters a lot for an oil-importing country. The US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.24%, its highest since 2007, making global money more cautious about emerging market shares. And foreign investors kept selling — ₹5,353 crore on Monday alone. The rupee slipped 28 paise to ₹96.03 against the dollar in the same session.

Data sources: NSE and BSE exchange data, NSE IX (GIFT Nifty), provisional FII/DII figures published by the exchanges, and market reports from Business Standard, Kotak Neo, Upstox, 5paisa, HDFC Sky and NiftyTrader. Provisional institutional figures are subject to revision. Where different data providers showed slightly different values for India VIX and crude oil, we have used the figure closest to the official close and noted the timestamp.
