Stock Market Today, 5 October 2026: GIFT Nifty Hints at a Gap-Up, Nifty and Sensex Pre-Market Cues, FII DII Data and Stocks in News
October 5, 2026 | by NammaStockMarket
NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:30 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST
Good morning, and welcome back after the long weekend. Friday was Gandhi Jayanti, so the share market today reopens after a three-day break — and there is plenty to catch up on. GIFT Nifty today is signalling a higher start, US markets ended Friday on a strong note after a soft jobs report, and the RBI’s rate-setting meeting begins this morning. But the backdrop is still heavy: Nifty 50 and Sensex just finished their eighth straight losing week, the longest such run on record, and FII DII data shows foreign investors sold over ₹34,000 crore in just four sessions last week. Add a Tuesday F&O expiry and the start of Q2 earnings season, and this becomes a genuinely busy week. Let us walk through the numbers over a cup of chai.
A quick note before we start: people search for “Nifty prediction today” every morning, and we understand why. But we do not make predictions here. What follows is data, news and explanation — nothing more, nothing less.
1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee
US markets rallied on Friday, 2 October, after the September jobs report came in much weaker than expected — just 29,000 new jobs against forecasts of about 84,000, with the unemployment rate ticking up to 4.2% from 4.1%. Weak jobs data means less pressure on the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, and that cheered equity investors. Odds of a rate hike at the 27–28 October Fed meeting dropped to roughly 18%.
| Index | Close (2 Oct) | Change | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 51,176.96 | +250.40 | +0.49% |
| S&P 500 | 7,722.72 | +56.27 | +0.73% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 27,190.86 | +319.27 | +1.19% |
Nvidia was the standout, touching an intraday record of $237.88 and pushing its market value past $5.7 trillion on continued AI spending optimism.
Asian markets picked up the positive handover this morning. Japan’s Nikkei is the big mover.
| Asian Index | Move (early trade, 5 Oct) |
|---|---|
| Nikkei 225 (Japan) | +2.60% |
| Kospi (South Korea) | +0.50% |
| S&P/ASX 200 (Australia) | +0.30% |
| Hang Seng (Hong Kong) | −0.23% |
| Commodity / Currency | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Brent crude | $103.06 / barrel | +0.79% |
| WTI crude | $91.57 / barrel | +0.50% |
| Indian rupee (close, 1 Oct) | ₹95.81 / $ | +13 paise |
Crude stays uncomfortably high. Yemen’s Houthi group claimed missile and drone attacks on Saudi Aramco sites, and OPEC+ left its November production targets unchanged. For an oil-importing country like India, expensive crude pushes up the import bill and feeds inflation — which is exactly why the RBI meeting this week matters so much.
2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator
GIFT Nifty is the Nifty 50 futures contract that trades at GIFT City in Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. Because it trades for far longer hours than the NSE, it gives us the first rough hint of where our market may open. Think of it as a weather forecast — useful, but not a guarantee.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| GIFT Nifty (8:04 AM IST) | 22,632.00 |
| Change from its own previous close | +21.00 (+0.09%) |
| Day’s open | 22,640.00 |
| Day’s high | 22,671.50 |
| Day’s low | 22,550.00 |
| Nifty October futures price | 22,520.00 |
| Implied gap vs futures | about +112 points |
GIFT Nifty is trading roughly 112 points above the Nifty futures price, which points to a gap-up opening — a start noticeably above the previous close. Do remember that a gap-up at 9:15 AM tells you nothing about where the index finishes at 3:30 PM.
3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close
Our last trading day was Thursday, 1 October. BSE Sensex today resumes from 71,909.70 and the Nifty from 22,421.95. It was the Sensex’s fourth consecutive losing day, and the week marked the Nifty’s eighth straight weekly decline — a record losing streak.
| Index | Close (1 Oct) | Day Change | Day % | Week % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 22,421.95 | −198.50 | −0.88% | −3.11% |
| BSE Sensex | 71,909.70 | −570.59 | −0.79% | −2.69% |
| Nifty Bank | 54,450.75 | — | — | −2.03% |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | — | — | −1.01% | — |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | — | — | −0.97% | — |
Sector-wise it was a tale of two halves: Nifty IT rose about 2.1% while Nifty Auto slumped around 3.5% after September vehicle sales came in below expectations, just ahead of the festive season.
| Top Gainers (Nifty 50, 1 Oct) | % Change |

Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today
Support is a price zone where buying has previously shown up; resistance is a zone where selling has appeared. These are simply the levels analysts and technical desks say they are watching. They are for reference, not forecasts — nobody can tell you where the index will actually trade.
| Category | Levels Analysts Are Watching |
|---|---|
| Immediate resistance | 22,530 – 22,610 |
| Next resistance zone | 22,600 – 22,700 |
| Major resistance | 22,900 – 23,000 |
| Immediate support | 22,300 |
| Next support zone | 22,200 – 22,150 |
| Major support | 21,800 |
| India VIX | 14.46 (up ~7% over the week) |
| Nifty daily RSI | 22.5 (deeply oversold) |
India VIX is the “fear gauge” — it measures how much movement traders expect over the next 30 days. At around 14.5 it is elevated but not panicky. The RSI reading of 22.5 is technically a deeply oversold condition, which analysts flag as a sign that selling has been intense; it is an observation about the past, not a signal about the future. The 1 October intraday low was 22,217, and analysts have also mentioned the CY2025 low of 21,743 as a reference point further down.
4. FII DII Data Today: Thursday, 1 October 2026 (₹ Crore)
FIIs are Foreign Institutional Investors — overseas funds investing in Indian stocks. DIIs are Domestic Institutional Investors — our own mutual funds, insurers and pension funds. When FIIs sell and DIIs buy, as has been happening for weeks, domestic money is effectively absorbing foreign outflows.
| Category | Gross Buy | Gross Sell | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII (cash) | 12,260.26 | 21,744.48 | −9,484.22 |
| DII (cash) | 25,420.04 | 15,378.20 | +10,041.84 |
| Period | FII Net | DII Net |
|---|---|---|
| Last week (28 Sep – 1 Oct, 4 sessions) | −34,966.07 | +33,455.30 |
| September 2026 (full month) | −44,012.82 | +76,030.29 |
Note how closely matched the two sides were on 1 October — FIIs sold ₹9,484 crore and DIIs bought ₹10,042 crore. Elevated US bond yields have been the main reason cited for the foreign selling: when US government debt pays well, emerging-market equities look less attractive to global funds.

6. Key Events Today: RBI Monetary Policy Meeting Begins
The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) starts its three-day meeting today, 5 October, with the decision due on Wednesday, 7 October. The repo rate — the rate at which the RBI lends to banks — currently stands at 5.25%. Economists widely expect a 25-basis-point increase to 5.50%, with retail inflation at 4.82% in August, above the RBI’s 4% medium-term target. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point, so 25 bps equals 0.25%.
Other dates worth marking in your diary this week:
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| RBI MPC meeting begins | Mon, 5 Oct |
| Nifty weekly F&O expiry | Tue, 6 Oct |
| RBI monetary policy decision | Wed, 7 Oct |
| Sensex weekly F&O expiry | Thu, 8 Oct |

Crude oil and global bond yields stay on the watchlist all week given the Gulf supply situation.
7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List
F&O expiry this week falls on Tuesday, 6 October for Nifty weekly contracts and Thursday, 8 October for Sensex weekly contracts. The monthly F&O expiry is on the last Tuesday of the month — Tuesday, 27 October.
Some jargon, explained simply:
- Open interest (OI) is the total number of futures and options contracts still open. Rising OI at a strike price means traders are building positions there.
- PCR (Put-Call Ratio) compares open put contracts to open call contracts. A reading below 1 means more calls than puts are open, which market watchers generally read as cautious positioning.
- Max pain is the strike price at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money at expiry. It is a statistical observation about where option writers are positioned, not a target.
- MWPL (Market Wide Position Limit) is the exchange’s cap on total open positions in a stock’s derivatives. Cross 95% of it and the stock enters the F&O ban list.
| Item | Value (as of 1 Oct close) |
|---|---|
| Nifty PCR | 0.69 |
| Max pain strike | 22,550 |
| Highest call OI strike | 23,000 |
| Highest put OI strike | 22,000 |
Analysts note heavy call writing across the 22,300–22,600 strikes, while put open interest has shifted down towards 22,300. In plain English: option sellers are positioned in a fairly narrow band around current levels.
F&O ban list today, 5 October 2026 — fresh positions are not allowed in these stocks; only position-closing trades are permitted. Being in the ban list is a position-limit matter, not a verdict on the company.
| Stock | MWPL Used |
|---|---|
| Ambuja Cements | 93.55% |
| Bandhan Bank | 90.72% |
