Stock Market Today 24 September 2026 – GIFT Nifty, Nifty 50, Sensex Pre-Market Cues and FII DII Data

NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:20 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST

Good morning, and welcome to your daily pre-market chai break. Here is everything you need before the bell rings on the share market today. Overnight, US bond yields shot up and Wall Street slipped, and GIFT Nifty today is pointing to a soft, gap-down start. Back home, Nifty 50 and Sensex closed higher yesterday with metal stocks leading, FII DII data turned friendly after a day of heavy foreign selling, and it is a F&O expiry day for Sensex weekly contracts. On top of that, the NSE itself lists on the BSE today — easily the biggest talking point of the session.

One thing before we start: this is a news and data report. We do not make predictions and we do not give buy or sell calls. We simply lay out the numbers so you can read the market yourself.

1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee

Overnight, a sharp jump in US government bond yields did the damage. The US 10-year Treasury yield rose about 15 basis points to 5.11% — its highest in a long while — after strong business-activity data and hawkish comments from US Federal Reserve officials. When bond yields rise, money tends to move out of shares and into bonds, so Wall Street fell across the board.

Index Close Change (23 Sep)
Dow Jones Industrial Average −0.63%
S&P 500 −0.73%
Nasdaq Composite −1.11%
Russell 2000 (small-caps) −1.60%
US 10-year Treasury yield 5.106%

Asian markets this morning are mixed, which is why global market cues today are not one-way. Japan is strong, China and Hong Kong are weak.

Asian Market Move This Morning
Nikkei 225 (Japan) +1.47%
Kospi (South Korea) +0.90%
CSI 300 (China) −0.73%
Hang Seng (Hong Kong) −0.68%

On commodities and currency:

Item Latest
Brent crude oil $102.57 (−0.82%)
Gold futures Flat
Silver futures −0.79%
Rupee vs US dollar (23 Sep close) ₹95.74 (−12 paise)

Crude staying above $100 a barrel matters for India because we import most of our oil. Costlier crude widens our import bill and can push up inflation. The rupee snapped a four-day winning streak on Wednesday as the dollar strengthened and importers bought dollars.

2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator

GIFT Nifty is a Nifty 50 futures contract traded at the NSE International Exchange in GIFT City, Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. Because it trades through the night while our market is shut, it is the first rough hint of where Nifty may open. It is an indicator, not a guarantee — the actual open can be very different.

Indicator Level / Reading
GIFT Nifty (early trade) 23,268.50
Change −182 points
Nifty 50 previous close 23,446.80
What it suggests A gap-down start

So the setup for NSE pre market today is a lower opening, driven almost entirely by the overnight bond-yield scare abroad rather than anything domestic.

3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close

Wednesday was a good day. Metal stocks rallied hard, FMCG and PSU banks chipped in, and only IT and media finished in the red. Market breadth was strongly positive — far more stocks rose than fell.

Index Close (23 Sep) Change % Change
Nifty 50 23,446.80 +117.80 +0.50%
BSE Sensex 74,828.25 +299.17 +0.40%
Nifty Bank 56,548.90 +333.35 +0.59%
Nifty Midcap 100 62,396.45 — +0.70%
Nifty Smallcap 100 19,991.50 — +0.89%
Nifty 500 22,935.10 +140.90 +0.60%

Week so far (Friday 18 September close to Wednesday 23 September close):

Index 18 Sep Close 23 Sep Close Week-to-Date Change
Nifty 50 23,346.40 23,446.80 +100.40 (+0.43%)
BSE Sensex 74,294.96 74,828.25 +533.29 (+0.72%)

Top movers on the Nifty 50 yesterday:

Stock Move (23 Sep)
Bajaj Finance +3.41%
Hindalco Industries +3.17%
Tata Steel +3.16%
Apollo Hospitals +2.64%
JSW Steel +2.43%
HCL Technologies −1.08%
Titan Company −0.98%
TCS −0.93%
Infosys −0.86%
Coal India −0.81%

Sector-wise, Nifty Metal was the star at +2.40%, followed by FMCG (+1.32%), PSU Bank (+1.14%), Realty (+1.10%) and Pharma (+0.90%). Nifty IT fell 0.87% and Media slipped 0.50%.

On market breadth (NSE): 2,344 stocks advanced, 1,232 declined and 113 were unchanged, with 135 stocks hitting 52-week highs against 52 at 52-week lows.

Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today

Support and resistance are simply price zones where buying or selling has tended to show up in the past. Traders watch them for reference. These are levels analysts are watching — for reference, not forecasts. We do not predict where any index will go.

Category Level
Nifty 50 — support analysts are watching 23,300
Nifty 50 — resistance analysts are watching 23,500
Nifty Bank — support analysts are watching 56,300
Nifty Bank — resistance analysts are watching 56,700
India VIX (23 Sep close) 10.29 (−6.41%)

India VIX is the “fear gauge” — it measures how much movement option traders expect over the next 30 days. At 10.29 it is very low, which tells you the options market is not pricing in big swings right now. That said, a low VIX can rise quickly if news surprises everyone. If you search for Nifty prediction today, you will find plenty of guesses; we do not make them. Here is the data instead — read it yourself.

4. FII DII Data Today: Wednesday, 23 September 2026 (₹ Crore)

FII means Foreign Institutional Investors — overseas funds. DII means Domestic Institutional Investors — our own mutual funds, insurers and pension funds. Watching who is buying and who is selling in the cash market tells you a lot about the mood.

Category Gross Buy Gross Sell Net
FII (23 Sep) 13,580.40 11,963.00 +1,617.40
DII (23 Sep) 14,404.90 12,063.40 +2,341.50
FII (22 Sep) 9,845.80 13,655.80 −3,810.00
DII (22 Sep) 14,599.70 10,479.60 +4,120.10

Both sides were buyers on Wednesday, which is a nice change after Tuesday’s heavy foreign selling. Here is how the week stacks up so far:

Category Mon 21 Sep Tue 22 Sep Wed 23 Sep Week-to-Date Net
FII net −576.20 −3,810.00 +1,617.40 −2,768.80
DII net +2,797.27 +4,120.07 +2,341.50 +9,258.84

The pattern is familiar: foreign money has been a net seller this week, and domestic institutions have more than absorbed it. That domestic cushion — largely SIP money flowing into mutual funds every month — is a big reason the market has held up.

6. Key Events Today: NSE Listing, SEBI Board Meeting and Sensex Weekly Expiry

Event Detail
NSE lists on BSE The country’s largest exchange makes its market debut on its rival’s platform, after the second-largest IPO in Indian history
SEBI board meeting The market regulator’s board meets today to take up regulatory and market decisions
Sensex weekly F&O expiry Weekly Sensex derivative contracts settle today (Thursday)
Global cue to track US Treasury yields, after the 10-year jumped to 5.11% overnight
Crude oil Brent holding above $100 a barrel, which matters for India’s import bill

A quick note on the NSE listing: at ₹1,785 a share, the exchange was valued at roughly ₹4.42 lakh crore, or about 43 times FY26 earnings. Grey market premium chatter before listing was in the ₹40–₹68 range. Grey market premium is an unofficial, unregulated indicator and is frequently wrong — treat it as gossip, not data.

7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List

F&O means futures and options — contracts whose value comes from an underlying stock or index. Here is what the derivatives data looked like at Wednesday’s close.

Open interest (OI) is the total number of contracts still open and not yet squared off. Where OI piles up tells you which price levels traders care about. Option sellers (writers) at a strike will defend it, so heavy call OI acts like a ceiling and heavy put OI acts like a floor — until it doesn’t.

PCR is the put-call ratio: total put open interest divided by total call open interest. Above 1 means more puts than calls are open, which is usually read as cautious-to-positive positioning. Below 1 is the opposite.

Max pain is the strike price at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money at expiry. It is a statistical curiosity, not a target.

Metric Reading (23 Sep close)
Nifty spot 23,446.80
Put-call ratio (OI PCR) ~1.01
Max pain 23,500
Highest call OI strike 24,000
Highest put OI strike 23,000
India VIX 10.29

Expiry calendar: Sensex weekly options expire today, Thursday 24 September. The next Nifty expiry is Tuesday, 29 September — and because that is the last Tuesday of the month, it is also the monthly F&O expiry. Expiry days often bring extra volatility in the last hour as positions are rolled over or squared off.

MWPL stands for Market-Wide Position Limit — the maximum derivative exposure the exchange allows in a stock. When open interest crosses 95% of that limit, the stock enters the F&O ban list today. During a ban, traders can only close existing positions; no fresh F&O positions are allowed. The stock comes out of the ban once usage falls below 80%. A ban is a position-limit matter, not a verdict on the company.

Stock Status (24 Sep)
Kaynes Technology (KAYNES) In F&O ban
LIC Housing Finance (LICHSGFIN) In F&O ban
Manappuram Finance (MANAPPURAM) In F&O ban
Steel Authority of India (SAIL) In F&O ban

Note that shares of these companies continue to trade normally in the cash segment for delivery and intraday — only fresh F&O positions are restricted.
