Stock Market Today, 19 October 2026: GIFT Nifty, Sensex and Nifty Pre-Market Cues, FII DII Data and Stocks to Watch
October 19, 2026 | by NammaStockMarket
NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:20 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST
Good morning, and welcome to a slightly unusual Monday. Here is everything you need before the share market today opens. The short version: Dalal Street is coming off a blockbuster week, Wall Street is coming off its worst one since June, and GIFT Nifty today is sitting almost exactly where Nifty 50 and Sensex left off on Friday. So the two forces are pulling in opposite directions.
There is one more twist. Tuesday, 20 October is Dussehra and the market is shut, so this week’s F&O expiry for Nifty has moved forward to today, Monday. That alone usually makes for a busier session than a normal Monday. Add a heavy Q2 results day and fresh FII DII data showing foreign investors buying for a change, and you have plenty to chew on with your morning chai.
A quick word on something people search a lot — “Nifty prediction today”. We don’t make predictions here, and nobody honestly can. What we do is lay out the data, the levels analysts are watching, and the news behind the moves. You decide what it means for you.
1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee
Friday was rough on Wall Street. Worries about how much debt is being raised to fund AI data centres hit technology shares hard, and chipmakers fell for an eighth straight session — their longest losing streak since 2008. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both logged their worst week since June.
US markets (Friday, 16 October close)
| Index | Close | Change | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 52,002.41 | −175.28 | −0.34% |
| S&P 500 | 7,659.44 | −84.62 | −1.09% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,140.03 | −572.99 | −2.14% |
| Russell 2000 (smallcaps) | 2,721.37 | −45.90 | −1.66% |
| CBOE VIX (Wall Street fear index) | 19.99 | +3.53 | +21.45% |
One thing to note: US index futures were pointing higher early Monday, with Dow futures up about 0.46% and S&P 500 futures up about 0.70%. Futures are just an indication of mood before the US market opens — they are not the actual market.
Asian markets today (early trade)
| Market | Move | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Nikkei 225 (Japan) | −1.15% | Giving back part of Friday’s 1.39% jump |
| Kospi (South Korea) | −0.12% | After its worst week since 2008, down over 14% |
| Hang Seng (Hong Kong) | +0.52% (Fri close) | Closed at 24,187 on Friday |
| Shanghai Composite (China) | +0.24% (Fri close) | Closed at 3,716 on Friday |
Crude oil and the rupee
Crude is the one to keep an eye on. Brent has been sitting above $100 a barrel, which matters for India because we import most of our oil — costlier crude means a bigger import bill and more pressure on inflation. Early Monday, Brent slipped after reports that the US waived certain sanctions and tariffs on Russian oil.
| Item | Level | Change | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brent crude (Dec futures) | $108.10 | −1.50% | Eased on Russian oil sanction relief reports |
| WTI crude (Friday) | $101.41 | +3.51% | Jumped on Friday |
| Gold (international, Friday) | $4,166.39 | −0.11% | Gold futures up ~0.26% early Monday |
| Rupee vs US dollar (16 Oct close) | ₹94.92 | +7 paise | Sixth straight session of gains |
The rupee closing stronger for a sixth day in a row is a quiet positive. A stronger rupee eases the cost of imports and is generally welcomed by foreign investors, since it protects the value of their India holdings when converted back to dollars. Traders credited RBI intervention in the currency market for the support.
2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator
GIFT Nifty is the Nifty futures contract that trades at the GIFT City International Financial Services Centre in Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore, and plenty of traders still call it that out of habit. Because it trades for far longer hours than the NSE, it gives the first rough sense of where our market may open.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| GIFT Nifty level (08:07 AM IST) | 23,119.00 |
| Change | +54.00 |
| % Change | +0.23% |
| Previous close | 23,065.00 |
| Nifty 50 Friday close | 23,146.15 |
| Gap vs Nifty’s Friday close | −27 points |
So GIFT Nifty is up on its own previous close, but it is trading roughly 27 points below where the Nifty 50 actually shut on Friday. In plain language, it is pointing to a flat, slightly soft start rather than a clear direction either way. Business Standard’s pre-market read put GIFT Nifty around 23,112 with a mildly negative bias, which tells the same story.
Important caveat: GIFT Nifty is an indicator, not a guarantee. Many sessions open one way and finish the other.
3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close
Friday capped a strong week. The BSE Sensex today starts from 74,729 and the Nifty from 23,146, after a week in which information technology shares did the heavy lifting. Nifty IT rose about 11.7% for the week — its biggest weekly gain in roughly 18 years — helped by better-than-feared Q2 numbers from the big IT names.
| Index | Close (16 Oct) | Day Change | Day % | Week % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSE Sensex | 74,729.27 | +436.65 | +0.59% | +3.13% |
| Nifty 50 | 23,146.15 | +148.81 | +0.65% | +2.79% |
| Nifty Bank | 55,844.00 | — | +0.06% | — |
| Nifty Next 50 | 68,988.60 | — | +0.46% | — |
| Nifty Midcap 150 | 21,736.75 | — | −0.09% | — |
| Nifty Smallcap 250 | 17,637.65 | — | +0.06% | — |
Notice the pattern: the headline indices rose but midcaps actually slipped and smallcaps barely moved. The rally was narrow — concentrated in large IT and a few heavyweights — rather than broad-based. Market breadth was still positive, with 1,915 shares advancing against 1,404 declining, an advance-decline ratio of 1.36.
Friday’s top movers on the Nifty
| Stock | Direction |
|---|---|
| Tech Mahindra | Among top gainers |
| Tata Consultancy Services | Among top gainers |
| Infosys | Among top gainers |
| Bharti Airtel | Among top gainers |
| HCL Technologies | Among top gainers |
| InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) | Among top losers |
| BSE Ltd | Among top losers |
| Max Healthcare Institute | Among top losers |
| Tata Consumer Products | Among top losers |
| Jio Financial Services | Among top losers |
Sector-wise, IT led, followed by media, metals and cement, with autos and PSU banks modestly higher. Financial services, FMCG, oil and gas and private banks lagged.
Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today
Before the levels, a quick explainer for anyone new. Support is a price zone where buying has tended to show up, so declines have slowed there before. Resistance is the opposite — a zone where selling has tended to appear. These are observations from past price behaviour and from where option traders have built positions. They are reference points analysts watch, not forecasts, and they get broken all the time.
| Category | Nifty 50 | Nifty Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate resistance | 23,200 | 56,000 |
| Next resistance | 23,300 | 56,500 |
| Immediate support | 23,100 | 55,500 |
| Next support | 23,000 | 55,000 |
| Friday close | 23,146.15 | 55,844.00 |
| Volatility Gauge | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| India VIX | 14.06 | +0.27% |
India VIX is our market’s “fear gauge” — it estimates how much movement option prices are building in for the next 30 days. At around 14 it is on the calmer side, which is a notable contrast with Wall Street’s VIX jumping 21% to almost 20 on Friday.
Analysts tracking the option data point out that 23,200 is where the heaviest call writing sits closest to the index, making it the first hurdle on the chart, while 23,100 is the line they are watching on the downside. Again — levels analysts are watching, for reference, not forecasts.
4. FII DII Data Today: Friday, 16 October 2026 (₹ Crore)
This is where Friday got interesting. FII DII data for 16 October shows foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turning net buyers after a long stretch of selling, while domestic institutions (DIIs) — mutual funds, insurance companies, pension funds — were net sellers for the day. That is a reversal of the pattern we have seen through most of October.
| Category | Gross Buy | Gross Sell | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII / FPI | 19,951.59 | 18,785.67 | +1,165.92 |
| DII | 17,201.80 | 20,863.08 | −3,661.28 |
| Combined | 37,153.39 | 39,648.75 | −2,495.36 |
Last four sessions, net figures
| Date | FII Net | DII Net |
|---|---|---|
| 16 Oct 2026 | +1,165.92 | −3,661.28 |
| 15 Oct 2026 | −5,285.37 | +3,319.39 |
| 14 Oct 2026 | −1,857.44 | +2,670.44 |
| 13 Oct 2026 | −1,305.13 | +2,439.24 |
| Last 5 sessions (12–16 Oct) | −8,991 | +7,813 |
October 2026 month to date
| Category | Gross Buy | Gross Sell | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII / FPI | 1,52,988.62 | 2,01,757.63 | −48,769.01 |
| DII | 2,09,189.66 | 1,61,021.53 | +48,168.13 |
| Combined | 3,62,178.28 | 3,62,779.16 | −600.88 |
Look at those month-to-date numbers side by side. FIIs have pulled out close to ₹48,769 crore this month and DIIs have put in almost exactly the same amount, ₹48,168 crore. Domestic money — a lot of it your monthly SIPs — has absorbed nearly the entire foreign outflow. That is the single biggest structural change in the Indian market over the last decade. These are provisional exchange figures and get revised slightly.
5. Stocks in News Today: Stocks to Watch on 19 October 2026
A heavy results day. Three of the big private banks reported over the weekend, and a long list of companies announce Q2 FY27 numbers today. These are factual observations about why each name is in the news — not suggestions to do anything.
| Company | Why It’s in the News |
|---|---|
| HDFC Bank | Reported Q2 FY27 over the weekend. Standalone net profit up about 4.7% YoY to ₹19,510 crore, slightly below analyst estimates |
| ICICI Bank | Q2 FY27 standalone net profit ₹14,843 crore, up 20.1% YoY; consolidated profit after tax ₹16,333 crore |
| Axis Bank | Q2 FY27 consolidated net profit ₹7,704.67 crore, up 39.4% YoY; standalone PAT ₹7,003 crore, up 38% |
| Bajaj Finance | Q2 FY27 results today. Also plans to raise up to ₹17,500 crore via a QIP and convertible warrants to Bajaj Finserv, subject to shareholder approval |
| UltraTech Cement | Q2 FY27 results due today |
| Hindustan Zinc | Board meets to consider quarterly results |
| Union Bank of India | Q2 FY27 results scheduled today |
| L&T Technology Services | Q2 FY27 results scheduled today |
| IREDA | Quarterly results due; also among stocks with high MWPL utilisation |
| Tech Mahindra | Q2 net profit up 32.74% YoY to ₹1,585.6 crore. Board recommended a 1:1 bonus issue and ₹15 interim dividend, record date 23 October 2026 |
| HFCL | Q2 results today; order book and margin commentary in focus |
| Sobha | Q2 results today; real estate sales and new launches in focus |
| Waaree Renewable Technologies | Q2 results today; project pipeline in focus |
| Just Dial | Q2 results today |
| Delta Corp | Q2 results today; gaming and hospitality business updates |
| Jaiprakash Power Ventures, Gallantt Ispat, Piramal Finance, SML Mahindra, Bhansali Engineering Polymers, Elevate Campuses, Tatva Chintan Pharma Chem | Also reporting Q2 FY27 today |
A note on the bank numbers: profit growth at ICICI and Axis looked strong, but what the market usually focuses on in bank results is net interest margin — the gap between what a bank earns on loans and pays on deposits — plus asset quality and loan growth. Headline profit alone rarely tells the whole story.
6. Key Events Today: Q2 Results, a Monday Expiry and a Big IPO Week
- Nifty weekly options expiry has moved to today, Monday. Nifty weekly contracts normally expire on Tuesday, but 20 October is Dussehra and the exchanges are closed, so expiry shifts to the previous trading day. Expect the usual expiry-day churn in index options.
- Markets are shut tomorrow, Tuesday 20 October, for Dussehra. It is a four-day trading week.
- Q2 FY27 results from UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finance, Hindustan Zinc, Union Bank, L&T Technology Services, IREDA and more than a dozen others.
- IPO final day of subscription for Tonbo Imaging India, Zetwerk, Bonfiglioli Transmissions, Sahajanand Medical Technologies and Shellz India.
- Jio Platforms IPO — anchor investor bidding takes place today, ahead of the public issue opening on 21 October. It is set to be India’s largest-ever listing, so the primary market will be busy all week.
- Crude oil and the rupee stay on the watchlist, with Brent hovering above $100 and the rupee on a six-session winning run.
7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List
If you only trade delivery in your demat account, you can skip this section. If you trade F&O — futures and options — here is today’s picture, with the jargon explained.
Open interest (OI) is the total number of contracts currently outstanding in a strike. It tells you where traders have placed their money. PCR, or put-call ratio, compares total put OI with total call OI. A reading above 1 means more puts are open than calls; it is a sentiment gauge, not a signal. Max pain is the strike at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money if the index expired exactly there — it is a calculation from OI data, not a target. MWPL is the market-wide position limit, the cap the exchange sets on total open positions in a stock’s derivatives. Cross 95% of it and the stock enters the F&O ban period.
| Item | Value / Level |
|---|---|
| Nifty put-call ratio (OI) | 1.33 |
| PCR by change in OI | 0.57 |
| Max pain strike | 23,050 |
| Heavy call OI (OI resistance) | 24,000 |
| Heavy put OI (OI support) | 22,000 |
| Nifty Friday close | 23,146.15 |
Option chain data as of 16 October 2026 close.
This week’s expiry calendar
| Contract | Expiry Day |
|---|---|
| Nifty weekly options | Monday, 19 October 2026 (moved up from Tuesday for Dussehra) |
| Sensex weekly options | Thursday, 22 October 2026 |
| October monthly F&O series | Tuesday, 27 October 2026 (last Tuesday of the month) |
F&O ban list
| Stock | Status |
|---|---|
| Ambuja Cements | In ban period (OI above 95% of MWPL) |
| Steel Authority of India (SAIL) | In ban period (OI above 95% of MWPL) |
| Kaynes Technology India | In ban period (OI above 95% of MWPL) |
This is the list as published for the most recent session and carried into today. Because the ban list is refreshed every day, do check the official NSE list before you place any F&O order. During a ban period you can only reduce existing positions, not create new ones, and breaking that rule invites a penalty. Stocks exit the ban once OI drops below 80% of MWPL.
Other names running hot on MWPL utilisation and worth monitoring include RBL Bank, Tata Elxsi, IREDA, Crompton Greaves Consumer, Bandhan Bank, LIC Housing Finance, Inox Wind, L&T Finance and Canara Bank — several were above 100% of the previous day’s MWPL reading as of Friday.
