Stock Market Today, 28 September 2026: GIFT Nifty, Sensex and Nifty Pre-Market Cues, FII DII Data and Stocks to Watch
September 28, 2026 | by NammaStockMarket
NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:20 AM IST · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST
Good morning, and welcome to your Monday pre-market chai break. Here is everything you need to know about the share market today before the opening bell. GIFT Nifty today is pointing to a soft start, crude oil has crawled back above $106 a barrel overnight, and Nifty 50 and Sensex are walking into the week carrying the weight of seven straight losing weeks. On the other hand, Friday closed green, India VIX cooled off, and the rupee gained. The FII DII data still shows the same tug-of-war — foreigners selling, domestic funds buying — and this is a short, busy week with the September monthly F&O expiry on Tuesday and a market holiday on Friday. Let us go through it calmly, one section at a time.
Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee
Indian markets never open in a vacuum. Before 9:15 AM, traders look at how Wall Street closed on Friday night and how Asian markets are trading this morning. Together these are called global market cues today.
Wall Street ended Friday firmly higher, helped by technology and AI-linked stocks, even as US bond yields kept climbing.
| Index | Close (25 Sep) | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 51,828.62 | +0.93% |
| S&P 500 | 7,743.41 | +0.51% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 27,068.72 | +0.48% |
For the week, the S&P 500 added about 1.2% and the Nasdaq about 2%. The uncomfortable part sits in the bond market: the US 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.225% during Friday’s session, its highest since 2007, and the 30-year yield went to 5.502%, the highest since 2004. Bond yield is simply the return an investor earns on a government bond. When that risk-free return rises, some global money shifts out of shares in emerging markets like India and into bonds — which is one reason FIIs have been selling here.
Asian markets are mixed this morning.
| Market | Latest Move | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Nikkei 225 (Japan) | +0.89% | Friday close 66,364.20, +1.30% |
| Topix (Japan) | +0.48% | Broader Japanese index |
| Kospi (South Korea) | −0.46% | Friday close 7,080.92, +0.90% |
| Hang Seng futures (Hong Kong) | Flat | Little movement so far |
Now the commodities and currency, which matter a lot for India because we import most of our oil.
| Item | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Brent crude (now, 28 Sep) | $106.11 | +1.71% |
| Brent crude (25 Sep close) | $104.32 | −2.1% |
| WTI crude (25 Sep close) | $92.41 | −2.3% |
| Gold futures (25 Sep) | $4,337/oz | +0.91% |
| Rupee vs US dollar (25 Sep close) | ₹95.80 | +19 paise |
Crude cooled on Friday on hopes of US-Iran talks around the Strait of Hormuz, and the rupee gained 19 paise to close at 95.80. But Brent has climbed back above $106 this morning, and expensive oil is a headache for India — it widens our import bill and feeds inflation.
GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator
GIFT Nifty today is the first number every Indian trader checks in the morning. It is the Nifty 50 futures contract that trades at GIFT City in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. It was earlier called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore, and many people still use the old name out of habit. Because GIFT Nifty trades for nearly 21 hours a day, it gives a rough hint of where Nifty may open.
| Indicator | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| GIFT Nifty (7:31 AM IST) | 23,120.00 | −116.00 (−0.50%) |
| GIFT Nifty previous close | 23,236.00 | — |
| Nifty 50 Friday close | 23,140.50 | +77.40 (+0.34%) |
As of the last pre-market snapshot, GIFT Nifty was trading around 23,120, about 20 points below Friday’s Nifty close. In plain words, the NSE pre market setup suggests a flat-to-slightly-weak opening. Please remember this is only an indicator and not a forecast — GIFT Nifty keeps moving right until our market opens, and the actual open can be very different.
Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close
Friday was a relief session. The benchmarks opened flat, drifted, and then recovered in the second half to close in the green. Even so, the week as a whole was negative, and that made it the seventh losing week in a row for Nifty 50 live — the longest weekly losing streak since the Covid crash of 2020.
| Index | Close (25 Sep) | Day Change | Week Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 23,140.50 | +77.40 (+0.34%) | −0.88% |
| BSE Sensex | 73,895.74 | +315.20 (+0.43%) | −0.54% |
| Nifty Bank | 55,580.40 | +0.26% | — |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | 60,906.00 | −0.14% | — |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | 19,715.25 | +0.15% | — |
| India VIX | 12.16 | −4.2% | — |
Across the seven-week slide, the Nifty has given up roughly 5.8%. Market breadth on Friday was healthy though: out of 3,647 stocks traded on NSE, 1,925 advanced and 1,594 declined, with 128 unchanged. Ninety stocks hit fresh 52-week highs and 120 hit 52-week lows. Nifty Realty was the strongest sector at +0.92%, while Nifty Media was the weakest at −0.23% and Nifty IT also slipped.

Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today
A lot of people search for “Nifty prediction today“. We do not make predictions here — nobody can reliably tell you where an index will close. What we can share is the set of Nifty support resistance levels that market analysts have publicly flagged, so you know which numbers the screens are watching. Think of support as a price zone where buying has tended to appear, and resistance as a zone where selling has tended to appear. These are reference points, not forecasts.
| Index | Levels Analysts Are Watching | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 23,120 | Recent broken support |
| Nifty 50 | 23,000–23,050 | Support zone cited |
| Nifty 50 | 22,700–22,600 | Lower support cited |
| Nifty 50 | 23,300–23,450 | Resistance zone cited |
| Nifty 50 | 23,500–23,575 | Higher resistance cited |
| Nifty Bank | 55,000–55,300 | Support zone cited |
| Nifty Bank | 56,000–56,200 | Resistance zone cited |
| India VIX | 12.16 | Volatility gauge, −4.2% |
India VIX is the market’s “fear gauge” — it measures how much movement traders expect over the next 30 days. At 12.16 and falling about 4%, it is in a fairly calm zone, which usually means traders are not expecting wild swings right now. Analysts also note the Nifty is trading below its 21-day, 55-day, 100-day and 200-day exponential moving averages, and the daily RSI is around 34. Again — observations, not advice.
FII DII Data Today: Friday, 25 September 2026 (₹ Crore)
FII DII data today tells you who is putting money in and who is taking it out. FII means Foreign Institutional Investor — overseas funds. DII means Domestic Institutional Investor — our own mutual funds, insurance companies and pension funds. These are cash-market (delivery) figures from the exchanges.
| Category | Gross Buy | Gross Sell | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII (25 Sep) | 12,327.40 | 16,021.30 | −3,693.90 |
| DII (25 Sep) | 14,035.80 | 11,197.60 | +2,838.20 |
| FII (24 Sep) | 13,111.20 | 18,138.60 | −5,027.40 |
| DII (24 Sep) | 18,196.90 | 13,895.70 | +4,301.20 |
Zooming out to the full week of 21–25 September, and to the month so far:
| Period | FII Net | DII Net |
|---|---|---|
| Week, 21–25 Sep | −11,490.03 | +16,398.15 |
| September so far | −18,531 | +52,617 |
That was the fifth straight week of FII selling. The comforting part for Indian investors is the DII column — our own institutions, largely funded by steady SIP money from retail investors, have absorbed far more than the foreigners sold. Combined net inflow for the week was about ₹4,908 crore.
Stocks in News Today: Stocks to Watch on 28 September 2026

Global watch-list items for the week remain the same three: crude oil above $100, US Treasury yields near multi-decade highs, and the direction of the rupee.
F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List
Tomorrow, Tuesday 29 September, is a double event — it is both the weekly Nifty expiry and the September monthly F&O expiry, because the monthly expiry falls on the last Tuesday of the month. Expiry weeks often see extra movement as traders close or roll over positions. The Sensex weekly expiry is on Thursday, 1 October.
Here is the Nifty expiry positioning as recorded at Friday’s close. First, the jargon, simply:
- Open Interest (OI) is the total number of futures and options contracts that are still open, not yet squared off. Rising OI means new money is entering that strike.
- PCR (Put-Call Ratio) compares open put contracts to open call contracts. Broadly, below 1 means more calls are open than puts.
- Max pain is the strike price at which the largest number of option buyers would lose value at expiry. It is a statistical observation, not a target.
- MWPL (Market-Wide Position Limit) is the exchange’s cap on total derivative positions in a stock.
| Measure | Value | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty PCR | 0.92 | Slightly more call OI than put OI |
| Max pain | 23,250 | Statistical expiry pain point |
| Highest call OI strike | 24,000 | Largest call build-up |
| Highest put OI strike | 23,000 | Largest put build-up |
| Nifty spot (25 Sep) | 23,140.50 | Reference level |
Now the F&O ban list today. When a stock’s open interest crosses 95% of its MWPL, the exchange puts it in a ban period. During a ban you can only reduce existing positions — no fresh futures or options positions are allowed in that stock. The cash market is unaffected; you can still buy and sell the shares normally. As per the NSE security-ban file for trade date 28 September 2026:
| Stock | Status |
|---|---|
| Kaynes Technology India | In F&O ban period |
| LIC Housing Finance | In F&O ban period |
| Manappuram Finance | In F&O ban period |
| Steel Authority of India (SAIL) | In F&O ban period |
The exchange revises this list every day before the market opens, so do check the fresh NSE file around 9:00 AM before you place any derivative order.

That is roughly 20 points below Friday’s Nifty 50 close, pointing to a flat-to-slightly-soft start. GIFT Nifty is the Nifty futures contract traded at GIFT City, Gandhinagar — the same contract that used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore.
What were the Nifty 50 and Sensex closing levels on Friday?
The Nifty 50 closed at 23,140.50, up 77.40 points or 0.34%. The BSE Sensex today reference is Friday’s close of 73,895.74, up 315.20 points or 0.43%. Nifty Bank ended at 55,580.40, up 0.26%. Despite the green Friday, Nifty fell 0.88% for the week and Sensex 0.54%.
What are the Nifty support and resistance levels today?
Analysts are publicly watching 23,120 as the recently broken support, with 23,000–23,050 below it and 22,700–22,600 as a deeper zone. On the upside, 23,300–23,450 and then 23,500–23,575 are the zones being cited. For Nifty Bank, 55,000–55,300 and 56,000–56,200 are the referenced levels. These are levels being tracked by market participants, given for reference only — they are not forecasts and not advice.

FIIs were net sellers of ₹3,693.90 crore in the cash market (bought ₹12,327.40 crore, sold ₹16,021.30 crore). DIIs were net buyers of ₹2,838.20 crore (bought ₹14,035.80 crore, sold ₹11,197.60 crore). For the full week, FIIs sold ₹11,490.03 crore while DIIs bought ₹16,398.15 crore.
When is the Nifty expiry this week?

Sensex weekly options expire on Thursday, 1 October. Remember that markets are closed on Friday, 2 October for Gandhi Jayanti.
Which stocks are in the F&O ban list today?
As per the NSE security-in-ban file for 28 September 2026, four stocks are in the ban period: Kaynes Technology India, LIC Housing Finance, Manappuram Finance and Steel Authority of India (SAIL). In a ban period only position-reducing derivative trades are permitted; normal cash-market buying and selling of these shares continues.
Why has the Nifty fallen for seven straight weeks?
Market commentary points to three overlapping pressures: crude oil staying above $100 a barrel, which hurts India’s import bill; US Treasury yields at their highest since 2007, which pulls global money towards bonds; and persistent FII selling, now in its fifth consecutive week. Domestic institutional buying has cushioned the fall — DIIs have bought ₹52,617 crore in September against FII sales of ₹18,531 crore. This is an explanation of what analysts have cited, not a view on what happens next.
