Stock Market Today, 29 October 2026: GIFT Nifty, Sensex and Nifty Pre-Market Cues, FII DII Data and Stocks to Watch
October 29, 2026 | by NammaStockMarket
NSE pre-market report · Data as of 8:45 AM IST, 29 October 2026 · NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST
Good morning, and welcome to your daily cup of chai with the markets. Here is everything you need to know about the share market today before the opening bell rings.
Yesterday was a split screen. The Sensex fell 353 points because IT and energy heavyweights were hammered, but banks, auto and pharma quietly held the fort. Overnight, the US Federal Reserve kept interest rates on hold and Wall Street closed slightly higher. This morning, GIFT Nifty today is pointing to a steady-to-positive start, and most Asian markets are in the green.
So the big question for Nifty 50 and Sensex traders today is simple: can the index hold above 22,700 when crude oil is still sitting above $110 a barrel and the rupee is at a record-low zone? We will look at FII DII data, the option chain, the stocks in news, and the F&O expiry calendar. No predictions here, just the numbers, laid out plainly.
A quick note before we start: this is a news and data report. We do not give buy or sell calls.
1. Global Market Cues Today: US Markets, Asian Markets, Crude Oil and Rupee
US markets (28 October close). The Federal Reserve kept its policy rate range unchanged at 3.75%–4.00% in a split 10–2 vote. Wall Street took it calmly and all three main indices ended slightly higher.
| US Index | Close | Change % |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 52,475.10 | +0.19% |
| S&P 500 | 7,743.98 | +0.28% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,549.85 | +0.27% |
| US 10-year Treasury yield | 5.02% | +0.02 pp |
The 10-year US government bond yield staying above 5% matters for us in India. When American bonds pay that much, foreign investors have less reason to park money in emerging markets like ours. That is one reason FII flows have been choppy all year.
Asian markets today (early Thursday trade). Asia is trading firm this morning.
| Asian Index | Change % |
|---|---|
| Nikkei 225 (Japan) | +1.10% |
| Shanghai Composite (China) | +0.91% |
| Hang Seng (Hong Kong) | +0.23% |
Crude oil and the rupee. Brent crude eased slightly in early Thursday trade but is still uncomfortably high after a jump on Wednesday, which was linked to reported supply risks around Saudi refining facilities and expectations that OPEC+ will hold December output steady.
| Commodity / Currency | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Brent crude | $114.40 / barrel | −0.86% |
| WTI crude | $101.83 / barrel | −0.98% |
| Rupee vs US dollar (28 Oct close) | ₹95.28 | −21 paise |
| US dollar index | 102.40 | +0.08% |
India imports most of its oil, so expensive crude widens our import bill and puts pressure on the rupee. A weaker rupee, in turn, makes imports costlier. The two move together, and right now both are working against sentiment.
2. GIFT Nifty Today (SGX Nifty): The First Pre-Market Indicator
GIFT Nifty is the Nifty futures contract that trades at GIFT City in Gujarat. It used to be called SGX Nifty when it traded in Singapore. Because it trades for far longer hours than our cash market, it is the first clue traders get about how the Nifty may open.
| GIFT Nifty | Value |
|---|---|
| Level (7:01 AM IST) | 22,792 |
| Change vs Nifty 50 close | +93 points |
| Change % | +0.41% |
| Early session band | 22,715 – 22,845 |
A premium of roughly 90 points over Wednesday’s Nifty close points to a positive start. But GIFT Nifty moves right up to 9:15 AM, and this morning it has already swung in a 130-point band, so treat it as a live signal and not a settled number.
3. Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex Today: Previous Close
BSE Sensex today fell harder than the Nifty on Wednesday because index heavyweights Reliance Industries and Infosys both dropped over 3%. Below the headline indices, though, the mood was better: midcaps and smallcaps both closed higher, and Bank Nifty added nearly 300 points.
| Index | Close (28 Oct) | Change | Change % | Week so far |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 22,698.85 | −50.90 | −0.22% | +0.44% |
| BSE Sensex | 73,246.03 | −352.64 | −0.48% | +0.17% |
| Nifty Bank | 54,267.40 | +292.50 | +0.54% | — |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | — | — | ~+0.4% | — |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | — | — | ~+0.9% | — |
“Week so far” compares Wednesday’s close with Friday 23 October, when the Nifty ended near 22,600 and the Sensex at 73,123.83.
Sector scorecard (28 October). Auto +1.45%, Consumer Durables +1.41%, Pharma +1.04%, Financial Services +0.47%, Metal −0.32%, FMCG −0.56%, Energy −0.89%, Realty −0.89%, IT −1.98%.
| Stock | Close | Change % |
|---|---|---|
| Apollo Hospitals (gainer) | ₹8,137.00 | +4.43% |
| Larsen & Toubro (gainer) | ₹3,801.30 | +3.72% |
| Trent (gainer) | ₹2,913.90 | +3.31% |
| Infosys (loser) | ₹1,123.15 | −3.43% |
| Reliance Industries (loser) | ₹1,158.00 | −3.19% |
| ONGC (loser) | ₹224.89 | −2.16% |
Nifty Support and Resistance Levels for Today
These are the levels market analysts said they were tracking. They are for reference, not forecasts — nobody can say where an index will actually go.
| Level being watched | Nifty 50 | Nifty Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Resistance 2 | 23,000 | 55,200 |
| Resistance 1 | 22,800 – 22,830 | 54,650 |
| Previous close | 22,698.85 | 54,267.40 |
| Support 1 | 22,500 | 53,626 |
| Support 2 | 22,370 | 53,200 – 53,000 |
| India VIX | 16.25 | — |
India VIX is the “fear gauge”. It measures how much movement option traders expect over the next 30 days. At 16.25 it is in a moderate zone — not panic, not complacency. It had spiked to 16.76 on 23 October and has cooled a little since.
4. FII DII Data Today: Wednesday, 28 October 2026 (₹ Crore)
FIIs are Foreign Institutional Investors — overseas funds. DIIs are Domestic Institutional Investors — our own mutual funds, insurers and pension funds, largely powered by monthly SIP money. Watching who is buying and who is selling tells you where the pressure is coming from.
Good news for Wednesday: both sides were net buyers, which is not something we have seen often this year.
| Category | 28 Oct net | 27 Oct gross buy | 27 Oct gross sell | 27 Oct net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FII (cash) | +871.83 | 24,517.65 | 20,277.26 | +4,240.39 |
| DII (cash) | +643.35 | 15,702.74 | 16,952.77 | −1,250.03 |
Gross buy and sell figures for 28 October had not been published at the time of writing, so only the provisional net numbers are shown.
| Period | FII net | DII net |
|---|---|---|
| Week so far (26–28 Oct) | +3,649.73 | +2,002.89 |
| October 2026 month to date | −47,817 | +61,113 |
The pattern of 2026 in one line: foreign money has been leaving, and domestic money has been absorbing almost all of it. In October alone, DIIs have put in roughly ₹61,000 crore against FII outflows of nearly ₹48,000 crore.
5. Stocks in News Today: Stocks to Watch on 29 October 2026

6. Key Events Today: A Heavy Q2 Earnings Day and the Sensex Weekly Expiry
Three things will shape the session.
One, earnings. Nearly 30 listed companies report Q2 FY27 numbers today, including Asian Paints, Coal India, Godrej Consumer Products, Ambuja Cements, Trent and IndiGo. Stock-specific moves are likely to be sharper than index moves.
Two, the Sensex weekly expiry. BSE’s weekly Sensex options expire today, which usually adds volatility in the last hour.
Three, the carry-over from the Fed. With the US rate decision now behind us, attention shifts to what the Fed signals about December. Bond yields above 5% and crude above $110 remain the two global pressure points for Indian markets.
7. F&O Today: Nifty Expiry, Open Interest and F&O Ban List
F&O stands for futures and options — contracts whose value is derived from a share or an index. Let us decode the jargon.
Expiry dates. Nifty weekly options expire every Tuesday, so the next Nifty weekly expiry is 3 November. Sensex weekly options expire every Thursday, which means today. The monthly F&O expiry falls on the last Tuesday of each month — October’s was on 27 October, so we are now in the November series.
Open Interest (OI) is the number of contracts still open and not yet squared off. A big pile-up of call options at a strike price tends to act as a ceiling, because option writers defend it. A big pile-up of puts tends to act as a floor.
Put-Call Ratio (PCR) divides total put open interest by total call open interest. Above 1 broadly suggests more put writing, below 1 more call writing. It is a sentiment gauge, not a signal.
Max pain is the strike at which the largest number of option buyers would lose money at expiry — in theory, the level the market “gravitates” toward. It is a statistical observation, not a target.
| F&O Metric | Reading (28 Oct) |
|---|---|
| Nifty PCR | 1.05 |
| Change-in-OI PCR | 1.14 |
| Max pain strike | 22,700 |
| Highest call OI strike | 23,500 |
| Put OI support cited | 22,000 |
| Option-implied range | 22,412 – 22,986 |
| Nifty lot size | 65 |
F&O ban list today. A stock enters the ban when open interest across the market crosses 95% of its MWPL (Market Wide Position Limit) — the maximum total F&O position the exchange allows in that stock. While banned, you can only reduce existing positions, not create new ones. The ban lifts once usage falls below 80%.
| Stock | MWPL used | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Kaynes Technology India | 95.67% | In ban |
| Steel Authority of India (SAIL) | 85.00% | In ban |
| Manappuram Finance | 89.70% | Watchlist, not banned |
| Bandhan Bank | 84.22% | Watchlist, not banned |
| LIC Housing Finance | 83.52% | Watchlist, not banned |
| Inox Wind | 83.48% | Watchlist, not banned |
No stocks are expected to exit the ban today.

Can anyone predict the Nifty today?
No — and anyone promising a Nifty prediction today with certainty should be treated with caution. What you can do is read the data: GIFT Nifty is signalling a firm start, Asian markets are green, crude is above $110, the rupee is at ₹95.28, and about 30 companies report Q2 results today. That is the information set. What the market does with it is nobody’s to guarantee.
Data sources: NSE and BSE exchange data, GIFT Nifty quotes from NSE International Exchange feeds, FII/DII provisional cash-market figures, published Q2 FY27 company filings, and wire reports on US, Asian, crude oil and currency markets. Figures for 28 October 2026 are provisional and may be revised by the exchanges. Intraday global and GIFT Nifty quotes may be delayed and will move before the 9:15 AM IST open.
